If this makes sense, to me, maples are more of a "studio" kit, and the birches are more of a "live" kit. Before I get blasted by a maple lover, that is MY opinion.
Funny you should say that, because Yamaha has offered the birch "Recording Custom" for years, saying they are naturally EQ'd for recording.
I'm not saying I disagree with you - I've heard some great-sounding birch kits live and
recorded. I just wonder about marketing sometimes...
