Linear groove generally refers to a 16th note beat in which all notes are played in a "linear" fashion that is, entirely one note to the next, never two at the same time.


so for example (hope these lineup - = Rf, b=bassdrum, s=snare, h=hihat):

bhhbshhsbhssbshh
1e&a2e&a3e&a4e&a


Zigs grooves are seldom truly "linear" because they have more overlap, but they have a similar effect.
