If you like a particular sound, like the articulation of a tiny ball tip or the hugeness of an oval tip, get one of those. If you want the most variety of sounds, at least when it comes to playing cymbals, get an acorn tip.
Then it sounds like the shape of a tip affects sound more than the stick's response.
Would the shape of the tip cause the stick to respond differently? I'm sure it has a lot to do also with technique.
