For me, the big difference between SKB and Hardcase, is the case and lid designs. As mentioned, Hardcase use a one-depth-fits-all design, where SKB have fixed depths. My problem with Hardcase's telescoping lid, is that end loads are directly transferred to the drum. Of course, if an impact is large enough, no case is going to protect it. Lots of professional touring drummers use both Hardcase and SKB, and neither really seem to have any problems.
Since you're in the UK, Hardcase seems to be a no-brainer. Also, if you're going to be the one moving your gear, seriously consider Protection Racket's AAA cases.
