Default Quintessential Fusion Bands/Records

Hey guys, I come bearing another question.

I'd like to become more familiar with Fusion "standards" and know a little more about the genre, tackling some of the most important albums chronologically. I know to start with Bitches Brew and Emergency!, and I am quite familiar with a few records that have come out since then, Heavy Weather, Jaco Pastorius, Headhunters, Hot Rats, etc. I'm not a huge fan of Return to Forever and Mahavishnu Orchestra.. Way too many notes for me, but I know I should be a little more acclimated with the material. Another group who plays like that but is very unique and I can actually listen to for a little bit is the Dixie Dreggs. They're incredible!! I stumbled upon Spyro Gyra last night and fell in love. I love the more groove/improv based stuff with some composed parts but a lot of solos with some space in the music...

So what can you all suggest? How can I tackle the ever-expansive genre of "Fusion?"
