Re: Worst idea in Drumming

Ultra-heavy hardware of any kind- If you aren't playing metal or some other heavy-hitting genre of music you just don't need it. Having big, beefy hardware if you are playing coffee shop gigs is teh...

Re: Simon Phillips - playing odd time signatures.

Generic is a good way to describe the music... like "music to drum to". Simon's drumming however, is far from generic. I think most of us can agree on that!

Re: Has anyone conquered Alan Dawson's Rudimental Ritual?

By attempting go get through the ritual I found a rudiment I really need to work on. It's the alternating paradiddle-diddle starting with a ruff. I was in a pretty good flow until I got to that one....

Re: Drummers you like but can't stand their music?

Yep. Alphonse Mouzon was the shit back in the seventies with early Weather Report, McCoy Tyner, Larry Coryell, etc. Then he started putting out his own watered down funk drek. Just awful. Billy...

Re: building speed

I appreciate your honesty. I'm not really a fanatic for speed. It seems like there are thousands of DVD-educated fast players who have absolutely nothing to say on their instrument. I think I'll go...

Re: What's the last song that completely blew you away?

I went to see and hear The Charles Lloyd Quartet last night. Everything they played blew me away. They ended with an encore, so I guess the last ballad they played was the last song that blew me away.

Re: Learning Jazz..right way or wrong way?

When playing jazz with other musicians forget the lessons you mastered and play for the moment. The licks and coordination you are practicing now will seep in to your playing over time, but if you...

Re: building speed

I went home this weekend and tried out playing flat flam triplets for a half hour. I got so bored after about 15 minutes it made me question how serious I actually am about this speed thing. Maybe I...

Re: building speed

I've been drumming all my life, but I'm fairly new to speed building side of practice. Speed has never seemed like primary goal given my style of playing. Lately I've been inspired to give speed...

Re: Q For You Jazz Guys ...

Dotted eighths and sixteenths are used some times at slower tempos. Generally, the slower the tempo, the closer in you can play the ride pattern. The way Chapin wrote out those exercises is good for...

Re: Is 15 too old to start playing?

Give it up gramps. At your age you need to think about slowing down, maybe join a shuffleboard league.

Re: listening recommendations

Well, if you like Jo Jo you could do worse than to purchase the first CD by Screaming Headless Torsos. Those guys are all monster players and Jo Jo really kicks it.

Re: If you ever have been asked to play WIPEOUT in a club

I haven't been asked to play wipeout since I was in grade school and the song was in the charts. I'd love to play that again given the opportunity, but I wouldn't mess with the integrety of the...

Re: trad grip woes

That's because trad gip is inherently inferior. I use both traditional and matched. I really work hard on my left hand in both grips. After years of struggle my left hand is way better in matched...

Re: Hands speed

<geezer mode> Back in my day we didn't spend hours agonizing about how many minutes you could play a stream of notes at X BPM. Do you realize how BORING that is? We played music and if we wanted to...

Re: Should we compare ourselves to other drummers.

Yes, but only to make yourself feel superior. Never compare yourself to a drummer who's better than you are.

Re: What Finger Technique in Traditional Are You Using?

Finger technique sucks in traditional unless you've got long beefy Jo Jo Mayer type fingers. Otherwise forget it and use your friggin thumb.

Re: Bill Bruford Beezlebub Question

It's written out in its entirety in his book "When In Doubt, Roll". The main beat is linear. If you can figure out where the bass drum and snare drum parts hit, the hi hit just fills up rest of the...

I've also gotta go with some of the names mentioned up earlier in the thread.

Terry Chambers (I saw The Police and XTC during that same tour and would have to say...

Anything by Elvin from '64 or '65 is unbelievable.

My favorite drumming by my favorite drummer as evidenced by my avatar is Tony Williams on Emergency! and Turn it Over. I love the way he abused...
