Re: Eric Singer

Love that Badlands debut. Singer's great on it. Wish Jake E. Lee would come out of hiding and make some new music..

Re: Jerry Gaskill

His little drum break in "Over My Head" was a real lesson in doing something musically simple but oh so cool. He has great taste. Have you heard his solo album? Good stuff.

Re: Peter Criss

I think I'm one of maybe three people in the known universe that liked Peter's solo album.

Re: image - any of you guys think its important to look good on stage?

Actually they weren't rejejecting anything. The "grunge" scene looked the way it did because it came from a lower class than the scenes that followed it. Those clothes were affordable. If they...

Re: Drummers and their Teachers

Great Thread! Very Illuminating. As to the NY scene, I can't speak for the scene in general, but man, the indie/underground rock scene has been anemic of late. Not in terms of quantity (there are...

Re: The Bonham setup... I want!

Man, that is the ugliest baby I've ever seen behind a drumkit! Oh, wait it's an oversized kit. Just kidding Mendozart! =)

Re: Joe Lovano's Drummer?

Motian usually plays the Village vanguard or Birdland. If you get a chance to see him with play any group in NYC, do it!

Re: Ludwig Supraphonic

I own both a 5 and a 6 and a half but if I had to keep just one, I'd keep the 5 inch. It's got a little more sensitivity and crispiness to my ears plus you can use it for just about every thing.

Re: Opinions on Ludwig Classic Maples

Not Fred but here's my take:

Coated Emps on top and coated Ambs on the bottom really bring out a nice warm, woody almost "buttery" sound on the drums. You can tune em real high and get a nice...

Re: Opinions on Ludwig Classic Maples

Exactly. Ludwigs are like the guitarist's equivalent to a Les Paul or a Telecaster. Classic look and clasic sound but it can be used in any style of music old or new.

Re: Would you rather

Depends on what you call boring parts. I don't think any beat has to be boring, even a simple one. Some of my favorite beats to play are simple but the feel you put behind them, combined with a great...

Re: Wrapping Shells

This brings up a good question. What's the best way to wrap? Adhesive or glue? I've been to a few web sites that recommend glue and others that say no way, adhesive backed only. Who's right? What's...

Re: Frankenstein

I met their drummer's ex-wife once! My folks were looking at buying a house and some property in New Orleans. I was probably about 17 or 18. Anyway, she was our realator and she was showing the place...

Re: If you could jam with any bass player?

One name: Mingus.

There's a whole bunch I'd like to jam with and they've pretty much been listed already, but if I could only play music with one bassist, even though I can't play jazz to save my...

Re: anxiety - self doubt

Everybody feels that. It's okay. I saw an interview with Tom Hanks once (this was after he won his oscar and he was already a "sure thing" in the biz. He said (and I'm paraphrasing): "Everytime I...

Re: Is it wrong to be a drummer/percussion major and not love jazz?

Right on. In fact, speaking of Mingus, he would probably support your (Diaz's) viewpoint:

“Most people are forced to do things they don't want to do most of the time, and so they get to the point...

Re: Great Stanton Moore YouTube Video

I could watch that all day. The more I listen, the more I love the sound of his kit. I think it's time to go drum head shopping.

Anyone know what he uses? Looks like fiberskins on the kick resos....

Re: Help with my vintage ludwig purchase

Buy that kit! Buy it now! That is a deal from heaven. It looks like a late 70's serial number. But even after Ludwig put out their 6 plys they still had 3plys in stock and would put the post '76...

Re: creativity issue...

What I'm finding is that sometimes the sound or style of a band will require a specific way of approaching drum fills. My last band was a very driving punk-pop band sort of like Taking Back Sunday,...

Re: sound and feel over chops and flash

You bet I'm rationalizing! What I wouldn't give to be as skilled as Dave Weckl. On the other hand, in order to be that kind of drummer I'd have to be playing that sort of music and have a deep...

Bobby Macintyre is one of my all time modern groove heroes and he's got mutton chops:

Also Russel Simins of the Blues Explosion,...
