Re: Rock Gigs Not Very Rock Anymore?

I find that in big cities, people are too cool to dance, especially in the hipster age. People that are into live music in DC are into indie hipster rock stuff, if anything. I was once told my band...

Re: Did Bill Bruford stop practicing for a while

As someone said, Bruford was doing a lot more improvising with KC. He could not go back and fix parts. So you are naturally going to hear more looseness.

He said once that some KC albums were...

Re: "Nobody cares about the drummer, except for the Rush guy."

And then...just to blow my theory.

There is a drum solo at the Superbowl half time show!
I thought of this thread when I saw that.

Re: "Nobody cares about the drummer, except for the Rush guy."

I have always been aware that drummers are in the background. And I am not that worried about being noticed.
It is what it is. I have played a lot of cover gigs lately, and it's great to see people...

Re: "Nobody cares about the drummer, except for the Rush guy."

It's true that people will really notice a bad drummer.

I have noticed there is much more emphasis on how a drummer looks and acts then how he/she plays.
A lot of people tell me "I can't tell a...

Re: I've joined a band that I can't keep up with

Maybe try with some smaller sticks? I've noticed small changes in stick size can make a big difference.

Can we hear this stuff?

"Nobody cares about the drummer, except for the Rush guy."

A non-musician said that to me recently. This might be borne out in observing that most non-musicians talk more about Peart's drumset than his drumming.

Not trying to be negative, but I think its...

Re: Michael Beinhorn fires drummers.

Thanks. That's enlightening coming from an experienced professional. I am glad to see that the rules are not so rigid. Ironically- at semi-pro studios, click seems to be religion. It can really...

Re: Michael Beinhorn fires drummers.

I can certainly understand you had the band's best interest in mind when making your decision.
I am pretty sure that Keith Moon would have rejected the idea of a click track. Out of curiosity, how...

Re: Michael Beinhorn fires drummers.

Producers are really an outgrowth of the record labels, not musicians.

I had a friend who was in a band that signed to a few major labels, back in late 90s when nu-metal was kicking.
They had a...

Re: Michael Beinhorn fires drummers.

This is the guy who famously booted Hole drummer Patty Schemel from the band when they hit it big. (She ended up becoming a homeless crackhead, but that's not his fault). See the movie "Hit so Hard."...

Re: Game-changers?

When I was 16 my brothers bought me two albums that changed everything.

Police, Zenyatta Mondatta: I was never even interested in the drums until I heard Stewart Copeland. Specifically the splash...

Re: Anyone else play The Drum Also Waltzes?

Thanks a lot!
A great way to get started is what I learned from Peart in an instructional book:
start the pattern with your feet, then just start with a single stroke roll.
Pretty soon, once you...

Re: Anyone else play The Drum Also Waltzes?

Here's my take on it!
It was inspired by the Peart version.
I love this pattern so much. Once you get it down, the possibilities are pretty awesome.

Re: Has tradition been holding drummers back for 100+ years?

As far as grip- efficiency isn't everything.

When I switch to trad grip I play much differently. More bounce and lightness with the stick. Some of it is probably mental as I am in that jazz frame...

Re: Kit sharing

Isn't it funny how we agonize over drum brand, wood type, covered or not covered, head choice, nylon tip or wood,- all the minute details that make our sound our very own.

...and then end up...

Re: Classic tunes speeding up

Have you ever heard a non-musician say "that's my favorite song. Just listen to how perfect the tempo is!"

Perfect tempo was the creation of producers and their beloved click tracks.
I've had an...

Electronic pads are so loud...

I recently moved into a house, one major reason being I didn't think I could get away with playing my electronic kit in an apartment. The Yamaha rubber pads are damn loud! Standing outside, the bass...

Re: Creative Freedom

I think it depends very much on your bandmates, and how much respect they show when telling you how to play. The drummer is usually the one to have "suggestions" thrown at him/her. It just comes with...

Re: Got a hip replacement

Thanks Harry. Ha- I feel your pain. I have learned to put on shorts using only my feet. And even got a pair of socks on using only feet!

I am keeping up with PT and then some. Did you perhaps set...

Got a hip replacement

It's been two weeks since I got a new hip. Ironically, a good friend of mine is also a serious drummer and is getting his hip done. Mine was from motorcycles and his is from ice skating.
I know a...

Re: Understanding the Eddie and Alex Van Halen connection

Most people play the HFT bass drums wrong- they are not straight sixteenths. It's a shuffle feel.

Re: Understanding the Eddie and Alex Van Halen connection

I think the VH brothers are unique in that they had at least enough jazz/swing exposure to bring in some of that more musicianly influence.
And some of it is just in the DNA. Those guys are...

Re: Tom rhythms

I think patterns with some sort of double stroke in them sound better on toms. It can sound really clunky if you use only single strokes. Accents are also important when playing on toms to give it...

Re: Drumming: the spiritual side

Some great responses here.

Someone close to me asked me why I HAVE to do this. I don't get paid, it's a ton of time and work involved. Equipment costs money, gas to gigs and practice cost money....
