Re: Jazz Band Tryout

I had a really crazy time with jazz band tryouts. Going into high school as an incoming freshman we had band auditions before band camp and I guess I did bad because I was put on cymbals for the...

Re: Stupid Newbie Tricks

This is a really weird one but it really stuck with me.

When I was first playing drums I bought a Modern Drummer magazine and I was reading an article about "micing" drums. I had no idea what that...

Re: Being a drum tech

I personally know a few drum techs and none of them JUST tech.

One of them is also a photographer and videographer, so he sets up drums, tunes them, then shoots photos and video and is a master...

Re: What's the worst kit you've had to play on?

I had to play a gig on a converted floor tom kick/small kit with no cymbals. I used a mic and beat boxed all the cymbal parts. it actually stole the show and was really funny everybody loved it.

Our Bonham

I was talking to my buddy the other day about Bonham and a stroke of inspiration hit me and I wrote this. I posted it on facebook and one of my fans created the image.

Re: Acceptable reasons for you to get up from the drums mid song?

I've never done this mid song. One time the bar owner wouldn't let us take a break, he kept saying just keep playing, we don't want to loose this crowd. he kept bringing us drinks too.

about 2...

Re: Ok, who's playing over the festive season?

We have been really busy. We played our first private party on december 1st. Usually we take off the weekend before or after christmas but with christmas falling on a tuesday and kind of in the...

Re: Hello, Goodbye...2013 expectations, 2012 memories...

2012 was both high and low.

-I played 126 shows and stayed very busy. I can only remember having 1 weekend off the whole year.
- west coast tour, 2 east coast tours, 1 tv appearance, 1 uk tour...

Re: high velocity fans for drummers

I have an older model Lasko blower and it was great. It actually just broke last week only because somebody yanked the cord out of the wall and left behind one of the prongs. I had it for 3 years and...

Re: Custom Drums

I have a snare from c&c and I wouldn't recommend them. The wrap finish was done horribly and came with glue coming out of the seams, the finish was also ragged and uneven up at the top which was...

Re: What's the Appeal of Vintage Drums? You May Be Surprised.

I have two vintage kits, I bought my 73" ludwigs in 2001. I had a ton of experience with ludwig from the drums we used in high school. I wanted a kit with a big bass drum too so I got a 24/12/13/16...

Re: Affordable and appropriate micing for cover gigs

I'm confused, you are the one that brought up outboard mic pres? Nobody in this thread said they were important for live sound.

Re: Working musicians, a young man's game?

I'm 31 and I gig more now than ever. In my band we have from 24 to 44 so age doesn't really matter. I do think the road thing would be hard if I had a family. It takes a certain level of selfishness...

Re: Affordable and appropriate micing for cover gigs

I don't think anybody is suggesting outboard mic pre's for live sound. People will use a nice avalon pre or ssl pre in the studio, on kick, snare, maybe overheads but it's not needed live, any...

Re: Affordable and appropriate micing for cover gigs

I play bar gigs and we bring our own sound system so I am responsible for micing my own kit. I have this set of Digital Reference DRDK7 7-Piece drum mics. They sell for $199. It has 4 clip on...

Re: How much will you compromise when sharing another drummer's kit?

As long as they aren't left handed I can make it work with pretty much anything. Usually when I am sharing a kit it is only for a short set, 45 mins at the most and I can make anything work for 45...

Re: Is it possible for my drums to be holding me back?

I think the sizes of the drums are slowing you down. I used to have a huge ludwig kit with 2 24" bass drums, 15, 16, rack toms and an 18 floor. I would play that for a while and when I switched to a...

Re: Why would you quit drumming?

I don't know if could ever quit. I have been playing since I was 13 and I am 31 now. I have had a gig or a rehearsal almost every week of my life since then. I have only taken 2 vacations in that...

Re: Drum mods

Larry I like that car trash bag on the floor tom idea!

I am always putting my wallet, phone, pocket dump on the floor and then drinks get spilled or its dark and I have a problem finding them.

Re: Do you ever overplay the bass pedal?

I only do it if I am trying to show off.

I usually under play the bass drum. If you get to play big clubs and big theatres with rocking subs you kind of learn to balance out the bass drum and...

Re: When was the last time you made a fool of yourself behind the kit (or other percussion)?

outside of mistakes and missing changes:

About 3 years ago we played at this biker rally and it was pretty terrifying. All the bikers riding around out in the field, really rowdy crowd. They...

Re: Setting up side stage.

One of the bars we play at pretty regularly I set up to the far right, bass player by my left side, guitar/vocal, violin, then lead guitar farthest away. We kind of set up in a line. I make it work,...

Re: Poll: Can you practice drums whenever you want?

I can I just have to drive to the practice space 15-20 minute drive. I can be as loud as I want 24 hours a day there. at my house. I can't even play rock band drums with out the neighbors complaining.

The wild world of drumming in vegas casinos

I just got back from doing a week of gigs in las vegas at one of the casino bars. This is my 3rd time going there to do this but I wanted to share my experience.

The gig was 6 nights of shows...
