Re: The Choice to Play the Drumset

I chose the drums in 6th-grade band, and never looked back. I wish I had got started playing drumset a lot earlier, I didnít really start playing set until college, and even then it was just because...

Re: New Inde Snare Drums

Yep. Theyíre lighter to carry, and you can always throw some moongel on if it rings too much.

Re: Some band drama

Bands are like any other relationshipsópeople who have a long history of difficult relationships with others are probably hard to work with. People who have a long history of kicking drummers out of...

Re: Upstroke in the Orchestra

I just want to jump in and talk some crap about orchestral percussion in general. Thereís a lot of fear and boredom in that line of work, because you usually rest for 10 minutes, play 2 notes that...

Re: Upstroke in the Orchestra

The difference between upstroke and downstroke is really only audible on timpani, and even then itís fairly subtle. The only time that itís realistic to use upstrokes and downstrokes on orchestral...

Re: Is it a myth that certain drumming legends have an inimitable 'feel' on the kit?

I think it all comes down to how well I know their individual playing. And how different they are as players. And whether theyíre trying to consciously sound like the other player, or not.

Re: Is it a myth that certain drumming legends have an inimitable 'feel' on the kit?

You mean, could I hear the difference between them? Yeah. Could I guess who is who? If I already know their playing well, sure. Weckl and Gadd are very different players. Any decent drummer can...

Re: How do I tell my friend that his expensive custom handmade snare is shit?

Sounds like itís a really soft wood, or bearing edges are too round, or better head is too thick. I donít know. This is why I am so careful about which custom builders I buy from.

Re: Songs With Variable Tempo

Yeah, I disagree with his thinking on that. There are other ways to build excitement into the music besides speeding up.

Re: So that didn't end well

Yeah, and I kind of hate to just write the guy off, he grew up with my wife. But...to call him unreliable is understating it.

Re: So that didn't end well

I realize that it takes all kinds to make a world, and that weíre all at different levels of self-awareness and spiritual growth. But...tripping on your stands and then getting all mad at you because...

Re: So that didn't end well

Wow. Now thatís CLASSY. A panhandling cameraman at your rehearsal? I canít even begin to imagine how all that didnít end up with a record deal and decades of wonderful music-making.

Re: THe Conway Slingerlands have been Rescued

Yeah. No kidding. Iíll believe there are actual US-made drums in that warehouse when a long-time member here buys a set and confirms it. Not til then.

Re: PEARL STEEL SENSITONE VS PEARL ALUMINUM SENSITONE

Nobody can hear all those high overtones more than a few feet away from the kit, especially when other instruments are playing. Unless youíre playing a quiet gig in a tiny room or making a recording,...

Re: Proportional tom sizes?

Iím definitely excited about these drums. If they sound good enough, I might get a set. Or a set with copper shells. Or both. Lol

Re: Proportional tom sizes?

That kit sounds like a great idea. Iíll be really curious to hear how it sounds. And I think your idea is actually pretty solidóyouíll never need to use moongel on your 16Ē floor tom, and the set...

Yeah, Iím pretty sure Iíd be at around that number of snares if I were a full-time drummer for 40-ish years, too.
