Re: I'm just a "feel" drummer so I don't need technique, right?

I've always felt that feel is more important than technique, but technique is a foundation. So what does that say about feel in my eyes?

Re: Does your family understand?

My grandparents (on my mom's side) were touring musicians in the 50s and 60s. My gramps played with almost every major bluegrass musician you can think of (providing you enjoy that sort of music). My...

Re: Ridiculously oversized kits

I've never been too interested in a big kit, myself. I prefer to make an honest effort getting as many colors out of having few things. I recently returned to a one up, two down config. but for the...

Re: Overplaying

I don't really think there's such a thing as "over" playing. I think everything you learn on the drums has a time and a place. There are just things that fit the music, and things that do not. If...

Re: loudest snare?

I use a late 70s or early 80s Tama Swingstar snare. It'll take your head off, easily.
I know the Swingstars were a budget line of drums even back then, but this sucker is a monster.

Re: Bass Drum Protection Debate!

It does erode fast, but it's so easy to replace it with another strip.

Bass Drum Protection Debate!

So, let me start by saying that I use one of the old scool felt beaters, and a strip of duct tape to protect my bass drum head. The duct tape is a lot easier to move than the patches they make (or at...

Re: I have some questions

My advice for any beginning drummer, if you plan on being self taught, watch MANY drummers. I mean as many drummers as possible. There's likely ONE drummer you idolize and may focus on immitating,...

Re: Fast single stroke rolls with no fingers?

Youtube Dick Cully. He does a great job expressing the role that fingers play in rudiments. To put it simply, too many guys today are looking to their fingers for a shortcut to speed. You must...

Re: Drummer Boo boos :)

Don't feel bad. I'm notorious for hitting myself in the head with my left hand stick from time to time. I don't think anyone notices, or if they do, they might think I do it on purpose. But sometimes...

Re: Why Would You Want to Feel Low end on Your Butt?

I think they're a great idea. I'd love to own one myself, but there are much better things for me to invest in before I worry about one.

I'm sure it's been answered already, but I'm given to...

Re: The most "influential" rock albums

Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin II
AC/DC - Back In Black
Bad Religion - Stranger Than Fiction
I'd love to throw a clutch album on this list, but it's too difficult to pick JUST one.

Bobby Schayer

This fellow played for Bad Religion from the early 90s to 2001. He is considered one of the most influential punk drummers of all time. In 2000 he started suffering rotary cuff damage, which would...

Young Prospects?

I'm sure I'm not the only dad on these forums. And I'm sure a lot of you older gents have children much older than mine. Hell, some of you guys probably have kids older than me.
My daughter is about...

Re: Met a guy who really likes his E kit

I've messed around on e-kits at music stores myself. Some of them actually sound pretty nice. But they aren't drums.

I just can't take electronic drums seriously. Part of my love of drums comes...

Re: Slide technique questions

If you can catch the pedal sliding down, cheers. But for me, that's never been something that seemed appealing, or even applicable. But as far as the 'Slide' evolving to a twitch, no doubt you've...

Re: Slide technique questions

Sliding down the pedal doesn't seem logical to me. If sliding from the center area of the footboard gives you problems, twist your foot slightly as you do it. I can actually play quick double notes...

Re: who here uses in-ear plugs?

Skull Candy's ear buds are great for drumming. They give you isolation, but you can listen to a click or music. I didn't start using ear plugs until about a year, and I was shocked at the difference...

Re: Best Rudiments for the Kit

Ten is too many for me. lol

I'm sure I use more than two, but somehow my fills never really get stale just rotating between double stroke and paradiddle fills around the kit. I'm sure I play other...

Re: I don't study anyone

I'm not saying drummers weren't appreciated. Big band drummers were often the namesakes of the bands. I was just saying that most drummers weren't considered musicians. Buddy Rich stated himself in...

Re: Sonor force 3007

Force 3007 are great drums, especially if you don't have heaps of cash to spend. I've been a pretty big fan of Sonor for a while, them along with Mapex are probably my two favorite brands. I've never...

Re: I don't study anyone

If Anthony doesn't agree with it, it's clearly a false statement. You didn't know? He is the god of drums, and knows everything. Everyone's opinion is invalid just because he says so.

Re: The Drummer Gene?

I don't think there's a 'drummer' gene, but I think it depends on a lot of traits you might posess. Sometimes I think anyone could play drums with training, and then other times I feel like it is...

Re: I don't study anyone

I think, as drummers, we're living in a very interesting time for the instrument. Drumming as a part of a band is a very new concept, barely one-hundred years old. There are still areas in the U.S...

Re: What's ur brand, and why??!!

I'm pretty big on Sonor and Mapex drums, but I don't really show loyalty to any specific brands. If I like the way a drum kit looks and sounds I'll buy it and play it. About the only brand of drums I...
