Re: Name that rhythm

Also in the original of Knock on Wood

I've been doing a bunch of 60s soul beats lately, studying the likes of Al Jackson, Carl Cunningham. There's:

* Motown beat (I play it 4 on the floor plus...

Re: Al Jackson jr break in Turn You Loose. . . sounds simple . . .

Thanks. That's v helpful. Meanwhile, I've just been playing along to it and got it anyway, but this really helps me think about it. I think the difficulty in Construct's notation is it's not just...

Re: Al Jackson jr break in Turn You Loose. . . sounds simple . . .

As far as I knew I *could* read to a basic ability, and that the notation as I understand it doesn't fit what I hear. Then people tell me I can't read. But no-one seems able to explain where I'm...

Re: Al Jackson jr break in Turn You Loose. . . sounds simple . . .

Trouble is, I can't hear anything but 1/4 notes and 16th notes in the recording.

Re: Al Jackson jr break in Turn You Loose. . . sounds simple . . .

Whatever. I can't see where you're getting all the hits in your notation from. I hear unison bass and cymbal hits on the quarters, and the little snare flourishes on the &-a of 4 + the 1. What...

Re: Al Jackson jr break in Turn You Loose. . . sounds simple . . .

Are you just getting off on trying to feel superior here? I'm guessing so, because something seems to be getting in the way of you engaging constructively.

Re: Al Jackson jr break in Turn You Loose. . . sounds simple . . .

It was in post #14. I asked:

Anyway, yes, this is it. All I gotta do now is burn it in before our debut gig in two weeks :D

Re: Al Jackson jr break in Turn You Loose. . . sounds simple . . .

Your 2 bar notation made no sense to me in a question about 3 bars. I also don't know where the (what I percieve as) extra 8th notes in your notation come from.

Re: Al Jackson jr break in Turn You Loose. . . sounds simple . . .

So, is it?:

1, 2, 3, 4 &-a | 1, 2, 3, 4 &-a | 1, 2, 3, 4

Yep. Otis and the band live pushed it up to 180 or so

Currently I'm thinking I'll go with the horns on this. Get locked in with them on it

Re: Does anyone else hate splash cymbals?

I got a 10" Paiste 2002 splash that I really liked the sound of on someone else's recording. Then it has sat on a shelf for 2 years.

Re: What's the best things about your playing?

Groove. Hard, clear Acrolite snare hits. Nothing flashy, hardly any fills. Just groove.

Al Jackson jr break in Turn You Loose. . . sounds simple . . .

. . . but it's driving me mad. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xEvsJtrl60

The thing he does at 2:02. I'm sure it's a straight 1, 2, 3, 4 followed by something like 1-e-&, 2, 3, 4 and repeat. But...

Cover version permission for a CD - anyone in the UK done it?

My band wants to make a CD with a couple of covers among our own stuff. I think I need to approach the MCPS to get the permissions, but it's quite difficult finding out what to do online. Anyone got...

Re: Tip: How to play behind the beat

That's that basis I'm working on and I'm fairly new to putting this into practice. Also I read that Al Jackson Jr reportedly told a young Duck Dunn to delay the 2 and 4 a hair to get the swing. Been...

Re: Heel Up Question

It depends on the tune. Something fast will see you keeping your leg in the air more. Something with more gaps will allow you to go heel down between hits

Re: 17 practice tips that relate to drums I got from loads of violin video-lessons on practice

I like that one. It seems kinda counter-intuitive because as drummers we like the challenge of landing on the next note and getting the gap right. But setting at say 40 and keeping the 16th going in...

Re: Interesting read about certain song lyrics and their meaning

Listening to the old Howlin Wolf song I always wonder if Backdoor Man meant then what it means today at all. And the "eatin' chicken" bit too

Re: What's with The Who?

I can't really listen to em. They do absolutely nothing for me, except make me cringe with their jokey Englishness. Just IMO, like.
