This is not something we should say yes or no to. Young children can easily learn to read drum music. At a very minimum you should at least get to a level where you can work out what you're looking...

At a point in speed, I switch to using my fingers more... I think most people probably do. You don't want un-intended doubles, though, they will sound different most likely.
