Re: The thing you bought but you never use

I bought a set LP Aspire congas for a recording session in 2007. Turns out they had congas there. I still have them but never use them as I refuse to hit things with my bare hands. I will play them...

Re: Hoops

According to Andy, all wood hoops aren't created equal. For instance, a 19 ply yamaha wood hoop won't resonate like a solid segmented hoop.

I really dig the wood hoops on toms, but for snares,...

Re: Advice: left arm motion for fast double-stroke roll

I look to my "good" hand as a template and notice what muscles I'm using. Then I try and duplicate the exact same movement with my weaker hand. (matched grip)

It took me many years to even get...

Re: Who has to play to a click or backing track live?

Perfection IMO is way over rated in music. Let others do it is my stance. There's room for everyone, including people who don't go with the status quo on every front. Perfection doesn't exist in...

Re: So Frustrating trying to pick a new kit

My son and I personally have a set of 1966 champagne Sparkle Ludwigs with a 1967 Acrolite snare and a speed king foot pedal for sale for 1700 USD. The set is in perfect working order. It belonged to...

Re: Jeff Porcaro

Yea, I noticed it on at least 3 videos. It seems like a constant thing with him.

Re: Jeff Porcaro

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Every video I've seen where Jeff is talking and instructing, it's clear that he's dealing with some kind of abnormal stomach thing where it seems like...

Re: Do You Drum While Not Drumming?

No. At least I don't make noise if I do. I do everything I can to not advertise my drumming, when I'm not gigging. No drum wear, no audible tapping, no logos. I am considerate enough of others so I...

Re: Instructing new students: Speak/play first or read first?

Nothing to add but to share a story. Last night I attendedmy stepson's first jazz band competition. He's in 6th grade. Afterwards, I wondered out loud if when learning these songs, if the teacher...

Re: Who has to play to a click or backing track live?

I still feel that really great time is a huge asset, while perfect quantitised time detracts from the feel, especially in solos. This is just my own opinion.

Steely Dan is great (all recorded to...

Re: Would you join a band for popularity?

I was poised and ready to join a really great Southern Rock band in the 80's, whose drummer was leaving to do "Godspell". But right before he left....the Country Music craze hit hard. Circa 1982 or...

Re: G. A. S. I've got it bad

Telling yourself no. Simple. Allow yourself to look, but no buying. Shut yourself down. Substitute something different. Self control is a beautiful thing.

Re: Raising your game to work with pro's. Tips, tricks and advice?

This works good for me too. If you shift your focus to them, not you, as long as your playing works for them, nothing to fret about (see what I did there?)

Also people who improve....on a regular...

Re: is a lack of fills a problem for a first gig?

I'd add this. Good tempo and steady meter beats all, no matter if you're new or not. Fills...wait till you feel them, not before.

Re: Question about Shell Tone and Tuning w/Tune-Bot

Drums can be tuned to notes, I do it all the time. A good tuning on a round and true drum can yield a "pure enough" tone.

FWIW, with 4 toms, I tune the 2 racks so the bigger of the 2 toms is a...

Re: Your plans for 2018 with drums?

Keep sharpening my time. I want to be one of these guys that can clap any tempo from memory. Which seems impossible to me now. But some people can do it. I want to be one of those people.

Time is...

Re: What are your bass player priorities / red flags?

I like bass players that don't hog all the available space. They leave some for others.

Why the departure of your original bass guy?

Re: What drum trends do you NOT miss?

I don't miss rack tom mounting brackets that are bolted right to the shell.

Different types of screw heads on the same drum, ala Ludwig.

Proprietary anything.

Re: That smug feeling when...

This may be the first time I heard you play Aaron.
Are they your Ludwig Standards? Click track? Good job on the time.
Nice songs too, mixed so the vocal is easily heard. Pleasure.

Re: Playing one-handed with the weak hand (Rick Allen style)

Balanced. Exactly the word I use to. So it's in my head too. Big fan of building the weak side. It's long, hard work, with real benefits both inside and outside of the music realm.

Re: Do you necessarily like to play the drums to the music you like?

I like to play music that makes people dance. I don't want anyone to be saying, OMG what an amazing drummer. I don't need to be that guy. I want the girls to dance, that's it. It makes me happy.

Re: Do you necessarily like to play the drums to the music you like?

I'm not crazy about everything I have to play. Some of it I find schlocky. Christmas music. Grateful Dead is a female repellent here in the North East part of The US. Nothing's perfect. Dealing with...
