Re: Konnakol for Rock

The link is broke for me too. I don't see any reason why you can't take an existing vocalization communication technique and apply it to American rock drumming. Are you looking to convey something or...

Re: Jenkins-Martin (Blaemire) announces "Starry Night" Limited Edition.

I was purposely ambiguous. It does look like Van Gogh, that's what I was trying to say. Right, starry nights, Van Gogh painting, duh. It is an interesting looking finish. I can't decide if I like it...

Re: custom drum companies

Eames is a custom builder. I betcha you can get a new set of Eames for that kind of scratch. I have a set. Wonderful sounding instruments.

In addition to Keller, you could try Vaughncraft. The...

Re: Some thoughts on keeping time

I do admit I would like to be considered a pillow of society. A nice broken in feather one.

I had such a great time with you in London.

Exactly my take on that finish too, Van Gogh.

Re: Some In-Tense porn for the weekend ;)

GREAT shot. Totally captures the emotion. It's almost like you're saying...."here's my jugular vein, slash it open so I can die happy"

Lol

Not really, I just couldn't resist.

Re: Some In-Tense porn for the weekend ;)

Let's see we have Anon. We have WaitForItDrummer, we have Her Madge-esty, we have whitecatcafe, we have emmaticus, and we have Caz. LesIsmore is rumored to be female, but I have my doubts about that....

Re: Ostinatos

Hey you're welcome WFID...Most of the time, ostinatos happen organically, automatically. But understanding exactly what their function is and how it relates to the rest of the music and players gives...

Re: How long does it take you to find the groove?

For some people like myself, groove needs to be learned. I wasn't born with it. I had many, many years where I was basically ignorant to the concept. Finally about 2007, at age 49, I started to...

Re: Hiring drummers for a project, need drummer advice.

Just hire Bill Ray and be done with it. The guy is an absolute monster, and also a "feel" machine, if that's not too contradictory. You get the very best of both worlds, a very complete drummer.

Re: Ostinatos

Big fan of ostinatos here. I think they perform an essential, necessary and critical function in a song. In music, if there is no reference point.....you have to have a reference point to build...

Re: Some thoughts on keeping time

I've been known to hit it soft. I don't think it changes the outcome much. Getting high is like getting wet, once you're wet, you can't get any wetter. Unless we're talking crack.

Re: Some thoughts on keeping time

Not sure if he's referring to Midnight Zephyr or me on that one, it came in right after MZ's post, but somehow I think it's aimed at me.

Re: Some thoughts on keeping time

I'm sorry I didn't mean to imply mostly everybody. Certainly not the serious working players. It's a toxic attitude I do see here though. It's just that not many people defend keeping time, so I...

Re: Some thoughts on keeping time

It must have been a sinfully good feeling when they told you they wished you were their drummer Lar. It's even better when they compliment you on mic.

About the laser focus thing....I have to...

Re: Some In-Tense porn for the weekend ;)

Yes the East Coast get together. Just a reminder. I've never played on Sonors. So Sonors. I think I'm officially senile now. Wait, the voices are saying no.

Re: What Haven't You Played Yet but Really Want To?

Ooops my bad. Officially old and senile. So I'm officially old and senile. I think I'm getting old and senile. I must be getting old and senile. I wonder if I'm going senile?

Yes, the east coast bash. Friendly reminder.

Andy, the drums look outstanding. I really like the look of the lugs.

Some thoughts on keeping time

Bill Bruford once said: "when in doubt, roll". While this has it's applications, for the music I play, it's not practical in most cases. I've settled on a "when in doubt, keep time" approach....

Re: Double pedal - on it's way out.

Call us nuts, but Larry and I share the belief that for the vast majority of people, nutrition, not drugs, is the path to healthfulness.

Re: can the quality of your throne affect your playing?

I have no proof of this but I'm guessing heel up players put more strain on their back. I don't prefer a locked throne either. If I twist, I want the seat to rotate with me. I lock my seat top down...

The sound clip from the 12" tom sounds exactly like the sound clip from the 14" tom.

Re: Is this bad form?

I wouldn't even categorize it under form. That's just a choice. I do that a lot. If I can keep the ride going while I do a little filly thing, I do so because it sounds more continuous that way.
