Its going pretty well, though I don't have a lot of time to work through it all usually (i work 40 - 50 hour weeks). My teacher is having me work through the Riley and Ramsey/Dawson books...

Re: Drummers vs. other musicians

Exactly. If its their band, do what they say. If its your band, do what you want. If its no one in particular's band, it probably won't last long because of "creative differences" (temper...

Re: Building your own drumset

Someone recently made a DVD that supposedly has some good info on it. I forget the dudes name, but a google search should come up with it.

Re: open handed - low hi hat - 16th beats

Curious as to if any of you open handers plays traditional grip.

I find playing both hands on the hats at any height is more comfortable for me with trad grip even though I am a matched player.

Re: Traditional grip, ring finger.......

I played matched grip when marching snare. To me, trad simply does not have the control that matched does and is really more of a loose grip.

So even though all of the DCI corps march trad, I use...

Re: Rudiment Question

This is what I've always called them / heard them called.

When I work on paradiddles, I do two measures of paradiddles, two measures that consist of two paradiddle-diddles followed by a paradiddle...

Re: Good Deal? - Mapex M Birch Vs. Yamaha SC

Well crap.

I tried ordering the Yamaha set today. The color I want in the configuration I want is, of coure, out of stock. The shop called the distributer and they said that the kit is due in...

Re: Vintage vs. New

Both have their merits, of course, and both have their disadvantages. I am in the process of buying a kit and recently went though the same thinking as you.

I chose to buy a new kit (well, I...

Re: Good Deal? - Mapex M Birch Vs. Yamaha SC

Dallas. But my local store sells the shell pack for $699 as well, and tax would be $57.67. I want yamaha hardware, so the full kit is probably the better deal, no?

Re: DRUM PROJECT

I'm not a drumbuilder, but I do some woodworking.

Stain goes a LONG way. A small can (like maybe 8 ounces or so....don't know what sizes cans come in over there) will be more than enough.

Re: Good Deal? - Mapex M Birch Vs. Yamaha SC

Ok, I called Interstate.

They said their best price is $915 PLUS oversize shipping (probably another $80-$100).

So "Store B" still has the better price. I'm glad I called interstate, though. ...

Re: Good Deal? - Mapex M Birch Vs. Yamaha SC

Interstatemusic's site says:
Our Price: $999.00
List: $1,649.99
Savings: 39%

the 39% savings is the difference between what they call "List" (which is the same thing as MSRP, which stands...

Re: Good Deal? - Mapex M Birch Vs. Yamaha SC

"(both stores are DRUMS-ONLY)." just meant that both stores are drum stores...neither sells guitars, basses, keyboards, kazoos, whatever.

So 50% off of what? If not MAP or MSRP then what? List...

Re: Good Deal? - Mapex M Birch Vs. Yamaha SC

That doesn't include hardware.

Also, at $890 (the price before tax at "Store B") that is 40% less than MSRP and 11% less than MAP, definitely not a rip-off.

Interstate sells this kit with...

Re: Good Deal? - Mapex M Birch Vs. Yamaha SC

I've decided to order the Yamaha kit. My local shop is going to check in with Yamaha and Mapex today (haven't told them I've made up my mind yet). I have a feeling they're going to say that the...

Re: Good Deal? - Mapex M Birch Vs. Yamaha SC

Well, after I said the Yamaha would probably last me at least 5-10 years and the Mapex I might want to trade up sooner (at least the hardware), the wife said "$200 doesn't seem that big of a...

Re: Good Deal? - Mapex M Birch Vs. Yamaha SC

Yeah, you're right, but.... I had another thread a few days ago where I mentioned I've been searching pretty hard to find a used kit that meets my needs (20" bass drum is very important to me). So...

Re: Good Deal? - Mapex M Birch Vs. Yamaha SC

Its in my original post, but yes...20" bass 10"/12" rack toms and 14" floor tom (and 14" snare). This is how both kits are configured.

I've been working really hard to try to find a used Stage...

Good Deal? - Mapex M Birch Vs. Yamaha SC

I went drum shopping today and a couple of stores. At Store A, I told them what I'm looking for (Yamaha Stage Custom in fusion sizes 20-10-12-14). They offer to see about ordering a recently...

Re: why are drums apparently "obnoxious"?

As others have alluded to, I don't think its drums as an instrument that are obnoxious, I think its the DRUMMER. The thing is, it is very tempting to play the drums very loud and very fast. Would...
