Re: Name that rhythm

I'll start with the obvious one:

Bo Diddley beat (any Bo Diddley song, like Who Do You Love)

Re: Anyone ever try to poach your seat?

I seem to recall anecdotes about Swing Era bandleaders firing the whole band and then rehiring everyone but one or two guys. Seems like a passive-aggressive way of firing someone without actually...

Re: I got some Fiberskyn heads for free.. the heck do I use them for?

I use them on both sides of a bass drum to get closer to the sound of a vintage bass drum with calfskin. The drum definitely loses some crispness on the attack but that's what I am going for....

Re: What would happen if...

I disagree; the years of grade school and high school spent learning math and science and how to think are all preludes to learning a specific subject in depth. No one can enter a four year...

Re: Another Band Drama Thread

While getting an outside opinion is great, I don't think it will help to say "Well, this guy thinks I'm playing just fine". In fact I think it will just lead to more arguments about whether that guy...

Re: Good Bassist.

Making music is a conversation and sometimes you click with someone really well and sometimes you don't. Glad it's clicking for you!

Re: 10.000 hours of practice is not the magic number

I suspect people who improve rapidly don't find practice tedious. Practice, in fact, makes them feel that they have improved, but not ... quite ... enough. It's like eating Doritos. You always...

Re: Drumming Addiction and Withdrawals

Beautiful story, thanks for sharing. After leaving the Navy was there no way to shoehorn playing music back into your life? That's a real bummer.

Re: Do we really need expensive drums?

I agree that the musician makes the instrument sound good.

But I think the better instruments allow good musicians to express themselves more fully. They'll have a better dynamic range, will feel...

DW factory day

Anyone going to DW's factory day (http://www.guitarcenter.com/DW-Factory-Day-g26836t0.gc?rel=email&source=4TP4G1BE) this year? I've never been, always been curious about whether it's worth the drive...

Re: Making Ends Meet Between Tours?

http://time.com/31882/louis-c-k-bradley-cooper-famous/

I have nothing useful to add; I'm a hobbyist with a day job myself.

Just thought I'd buck the trend. :)

Re: Tuning "experts" mini rant

expertvillage and ehow and the like are content farms. They aren't meant to help you do anything useful. They pay people a pittance to generate any random crap so long as the crap uses often...

Re: Here's an idea

There's actually a few articles analyzing why games like Farmville etc. make so much money. (I've never played any of them, and my memory is suspect, so a lot of this may not be accurate.)

Re: Here's an idea

I think everyone's reason for committing to something is different. So if you want a particular person to commit to drumming, you have to interview them about what else they are interested in, and...

Odd time, non-waltz jazz ballads

I am having a hard time thinking of non-waltz ballads played in an odd time signature.

Are there any? I'm basically looking for ideas on comping. Googling 'odd time jazz brushes' wasn't...

Re: Mindless practice

That's actually kind of a neat idea. It's like a little test as to whether you've internalized the rudiment at that tempo, so long as you keep good time and technique.

Re: Mindless practice

Someone told me once to play on a pad while watching TV, just to build the muscle memory and endurance. I thought I could never do that; when I watch TV I like to focus on what's happening on screen...

Re: Anticipations, etc.

I seem to recall the chorus of Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams" (thunder only happens when it's raining...) is an example of what you are asking. Give that a listen and see if it inspires any ideas.

Re: What's your latest purchase?

I bought a 16" mute from Guitar Center, on clearance.

Fifty seven cents.

Re: Low frequency sensitivity

I went to a Ministry concert like that at the Hollywood Palladium. There was a "moat" (space gap) between the stage and the fans, and a security guy was walking through it in front of the speakers...

Re: Announcement - Competition finalists.

The rules say "play your own composition" or something to that effect. Jannis came up with his own composition, even if his teacher gave him some ideas on what to do. If the videos use similar...

Re: Why is it so hard for the band to follow me?!?!

The stereotype of singer/songwriters is a lonesome soul eternally composing and playing in a bedroom by themselves. I wonder if that has anything to do with it.

Re: Drummers around 5'6" - What size drums do you have?

If you have the room and the funds, a boom stand for your ride cymbal(s) would probably do wonders. Right now you're forced to put the ride above the low tom. With a boom stand you could put the...

Re: Looking for songs with straight in the pocket drumming.

i would nominate ZZ Top's biggest albums of the 80s, though I can't remember if those are sequenced drums or not.

Re: Announcement - Competition finalists.

Good luck finalists!

Thanks for having this contest, it was definitely fun to come up with ideas. I never did get around to drumming with sticks held with my toes and holding two bass drum...
