Re: What kit do you use?

It's very rarely the drum students, but everyone else who for whatever reason believes that the drums are punching bags or something, because they are struck to make their sound. It also seems to...

Re: What kit do you use?

I have two kits: a first-generation Yamaha Stage Custom in 8/10/12/14/16/20, and a 1972-ish Ludwig Standard with 3-ply shells in 13/16/22 which I recovered from being dumpster food to being my #1...

Re: Copper Phonic Video Demo

I find that Memphis Drum Shop's videos capture a good "real sound" with different playing dynamics and tunings. I usually only listen to cymbals on DCP.

Re: tom mounts on cymbal stands

I have done toms off cymbal stands for many years, and stand stability is only an issue if you take firm, confident steps to defeat the engineering of the stand to stay upright. The tripod is a...

Re: Stage Etiquette

Don't play while someone is tuning or checking levels with the FOH guy.

Don't noodle in between songs at a gig.

Don't needlessly embarrass another person on the stage at a gig.

Don't just...

Re: The 23" bass drum

This. I know you gig in SoCal where you have great drum stores all over, but 23" heads are usually special order almost everywhere. And good luck finding a case or gig bag for it.

Re: Jazz setup

Also: if you are using some of your 'normal' drums for jazz duty, you may want to address the heads and tuning. Rather than heavy-duty double-ply heads tuned very loose, get some single-ply coated...

Re: What is your drum setup pet peeve?

Pearl L-arm tom mounts done incorrectly, causing the rack toms to look like Mickey Mouse ears a half-mile apart.

Extreme tom angles at seated eye level.

Hi-hat and kick pedals at 90-degree...

Re: My Ludwig collection

In between owning the drumsets most of us dream about, photographing some stellar eye candy, and subbing for Bermuda, I'm sure he lies awake at night agonizing over our opinions.

Matt, buddy,...

Re: Other than practice- quickest way to improve?

Obviously practicing is the number one key to getting good and staying good. But I also highly recommend a few other things to advance more quickly in drumming.

Listen to a lot of music, different...

Re: My Ludwig collection

Revoting for the blue sparkle. That's the kit I'll probably gravitate to whenever I manage to come visit... if it's still there by then...

Re: THE CLASSIFIEDS - For Sale / Wanted

Not mine, but a shoutout for a Goodwill auction in Orange County. Looks like some player-grade Slingerlands with a Ludwig double tom mount and an LM400 in dirty but fair condition. Possibly worth...

Re: Successful Songs in Set?

This. It's one thing to have a set list, but you need to be able to flex with what the crowd wants. Keep some alternatives in your pocket that you can jam in if need be.

Re: Help Choose My Focus - Drums or Bass

I'm also 43 and also play both drums and bass. I have ended up on drums over the years, even though I played the bass before the drums. While I don't play bass quite as often as I used to (I took a...

Re: I must be an anachronism

I just think that it's simple economics and marketing, Bo. The impressionable young drummers of today are playing 18" deep kicks and short stack toms for the same reason you gravitate towards your...

Re: Creating A Logo

Usually I take that task on by myself, with input from the other band members. I'm a freelance graphic designer, so that usually works out well for everyone.

Re: Ok, you were right - it is a bit tricky :)

I inverted the beat the first time, half-timed it for a few measures to invert the beat the second time, and brought the dynamic down to lead in the third time. Since I purposely did it without...

Re: Anyone else notice the cost of sticks getting ridiculous

Last year Music123 had a sale for Vic Firth Rock sticks at $3.50 a pair or something, so I bought two pair. Last fall GC had black VF 5As and 5Bs on sale for $5 a pair, so I bought 6 pair of each....

Re: Some Pearl Vision Porn ;)

For the record, I never said Pearl doesn't make good-sounding drums.

Just ugly drums. With butt-ugly hardware.
