Re: The gig that you turned down, and it's a good thing you did!

i once turned down a Blues gig in downtown ATL in early 90s. some well known BBQ place i am blanking. there was a drive-by shooting & the drummer caught a slug in his calf...i think while playing...

Re: Live BPM and Metronome App Together

i use Live BMP on my iPhone and then run ForScore with it's Metronome widget turned on (flash to screen, sometimes click sound & flash) so that i have tempos as i kick off tunes with my PDF charts. i...

Re: Mastering the Tables of Time

i think you are referencing Joe Morello's "Master Studies": https://www.amazon.com/Master-Studies-Joe-Morello/dp/088188748X/ . there is a section under Control Studies where he details the Table of...

the basic groove is a 16th note hi hat thing w/ accents on the "ands" as open hi hats. essential a rock / disco groove. xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx - hats with open notes on all the "ands". kick on 1 /3 and...

Re: Right/Wrong For You Bass Pedal Foot Technique?

another vote for "all the things!".

for me, but i never got good at serious heel-down (but do warm up w/ this)...or heel / toe ala Gadd & got into swivel in early 90s thanks to Dom Famularo. got...

Re: is a lack of fills a problem for a first gig?

First gig: absolutely fine to leave fills out. My gut say memorize the tunes & the night of the gig, focus 100% on the music. No drumistic anything. No logical thought. Go blank & get into "flow...

Re: Gear flipping on a small island.

Cool backstory. My first thought was it it finally time to start making your own stave drums. As in snares as a beginning point. What kind of interesting wood can you source on these islands ? :-)

Re: My new DRUM! article

Great points / article. No one talks about this. "And don’t worry. Nobody will ever say, “How come you can’t make the song your own?” Just be prepared for the onslaught of compliments you get for...

Re: Keeping relaxed when aiming for speed?

what has been paying off for me is the Murray Spivack 15 minute exercise that Chad Wackerman detailed on Drum Channel a while back. 16ths at 3 (or 4) tempos: lets say 150 - 170 - 190. each one for 5...

Re: Sharing kit etiquette on gigs.

Good call on using the "backup kit" yamaha if you are providing backline. It's kind of assumed the drummers will provide BD pedal, sticks & cymbals. Have a decent Hi-Hat stand there but watch for 1...

Re: Choosing a new Aluminum Snare

Just based on the SOUND FILES online...i would go w/ the Oriollo Phantom - $524 (corrected for VAT). this is a sight unseen scenario where i KNOW the drum sounds amazing thru good mics. i have not...

Re: DW Drums from a Non-DW Player's Perspective

i was actually very impressed when i played a hi-end maple DW kit as a back-line kit for a fall festival last year. i was worried about the thin / flat tom reputation (Chad Wackerman's sound from the...

Re: Counting septuplets

AH !! love prevails. you guys are great. get back in the woodshed; tonight it's 16th notes grouped in 7s, 5s and 3s.

Re: Counting septuplets

at 1:24 Austin says "seven note grouping". but initially uses the term "7s". might be mis-leading folks new to this concept because they are NOT septuplets (like Alex said) as in out of Morello's...

Re: Counting septuplets

i think if you put on a click (maybe eighth notes on the click. play eighths on the hi-hat as an option too) & play through 16ths grouped as 7s for 5-10 minutes, you wont have to count anything. you...

Re: Am I drumming for the wrong reasons?

Re: Bass drum muffling device? Pics?

very VERY happy w/ the KickPro weighted pillow. sound engineers dont need to roll off as much or gate. just crank it (granted i play a lot of funk & pop gigs). nice controlled thud w/ tone & in-ars...

Re: The straight 4-hour gig.

Crazy. That won't last even for a determined club owner unless this is some planned rotation thing where keys keep playing during player change outs. Most i ever played was just over 2 hours...BUT it...
