Re: Mixer for direct monitoring?

I have no pictures, but I usually stick with a Mackie 1604VLZ3 or a Yamaha O1v, for precisely the reasons you mentioned: I need the available auxiliary inputs and outputs. I think in analog world,...

Re: Deep bass drums

I'm one of those guys who've played them at all depths and this is loaded question because it's dependent on the heads you use, whether or not you're using an internal muffler of some sort. Usually,...

Re: Base Drum volume. HELP Please talk me down off this ledge.

Why not play a big 16x26 bass drum then? That would give you the extra oomph acoustically and you would need no electronics. If you absolutely have to go through a PA, you could literally mic up a...

Re: Base Drum volume. HELP Please talk me down off this ledge.

I think it would be easier to just have the powered sub, a small mixer, then just mic your regular bass drum and run just that through the sub. Circular wood shells can be strong, but I don't think...

Re: Progress on the vintage Yamahas

Just this one so far: https://youtu.be/4-KVBYzf6is

But now the kit is back in pieces for now. I need to pack the lugs on the small tom since one of the springs is rattling. And the bass drum...

Re: Progress on the vintage Yamahas

It's probably some mystery combination of woods. Maybe luan, maybe mahogany, maybe birch. The inner ply that goes horizontal inside the shell certainly looks more maple now that it's been re-oiled,...

Re: I wonder if Neil Peart will ever play again?

I wish him the best retirement - and if he never plays again, that's cool too. He totally deserves a break.

Re: Vintage Yamaha's are complete!

I have some heavier heads to try - I think you're right, I'm gonna go for that to fatten them up.

The little Charlie Watts spurs are also not working out for me. I will be upgrading to modern...

Re: Why are drummers/musicians/music-listeners so defensive online?

No, it's just the nature of the internet. People just say stuff they're not brave enough to actually say in-person - they are keyboard warriors. And it's not just music stuff, anything gets...

Re: Snare buZZZZZZ and recording

So are you doing this with close miking? Then right there, you're already not getting a natural sound. To get natural, just throw up two very good overhead mics and record yourself in stereo. ...

Re: Vintage Yamaha's are complete!

For a few minutes I was tempted - but the feeling was squashed when I realized the little kit was getting in on the territory of my Pearls. Thanks for the suggestion though - sometimes 14x14 is just...

Re: Pearl brass Sensitone video!

I have to admit as well, this being my real first Sensitone, I am surprised. I remember getting this kind of tone from a Ludwig Black Beauty thinking that drum was the only way to get it. But even...

Re: Snare buZZZZZZ and recording

You need to delve into the realm of dynamics processors. Try a noise gate on the snare, that should alleviate a lot coming from the snare that doesn't get over a certain threshold. There are...

Re: Deep bass drums

I dunno. Iíve come to like the 18x22, especially after years in the 14Ē camp. I can make either depth work. Whatís weird to me is shallower bass drums. Thereís so much marketing about ďgiggingĒ...

Vintage Yamaha's are complete!

It took a few days but the little Yamaha kit is up and running! It's actually a joy to play - it sounds decent. I repaired the extra holes with caps and wood filler and some paint. The floor tom...

Re: Pearl brass Sensitone video!

I do like how the die cast hoops focus it a bit more. It doesnít seem wildly ringy, just good ringy. You have to specify which Sensitone youíre talking about though. Pearl does include snares...

Re: Pearl sensitone bronze snare drum

I actually got both the bronze and black brass Sensitone. I want to say the bronze sounded a little dryer than the brass. Both were great, but I decided to stick with the brass as I liked it to be...

Re: What drums intrigue you that you have NEVER owned

And we can't have that!

No, I want a set that's not drilled for bottom heads, and has no bearing edge cut on the bottom, but has a metal ring to protect the exposed edges. Make them...

Re: Pearl brass Sensitone video

Thanks. All those years in marching groups and drum corps I can thank for that (or blame?).

It always blew my mind that Davey Tough couldn't roll, but he worked all the time!

Progress on the vintage Yamahas

So I dismantled the vintage Yamaha kit today. What I wanted to point out about this hardware that's 50 years old (assuming since Yamaha started making drums in 1967, maybe this kit was made in 1968...

Re: Pearl brass Sensitone video!

Thanks so much. I appreciate the kind words. One reason I don't do the crazy chop fest stuff is basically because I can't do stuff like that. I like to think I made a career out of doing what's...

Re: When Made In Japan was a bad thing ;)

I had one of those years ago! I hope I donít need to get another one. Heck, Charlie Watts doesnít use one, maybe Iíll be that lucky ;)

Re: When Made In Japan was a bad thing ;)

Youíre right. Iím gonna try it with the metal hoops first. If it works out well Iíll keep using those. Iíve just upgraded the bass drum claws and the spur legs will be replaced with longer ones...

When Made In Japan was a bad thing ;)

I picked these up from a fellow member here while cruising eBay. Dig it: a 1960s Yamaha drum set!

I looked it up, Yamaha started making drums in 1967, so these could be any year after that...
