Re: Jeff Johnson The Level System

It's a great asset to have, especially for someone who still hand writes notes as he goes along. Just the other day I was working with a student and he said, why is the upstroke there if the accent...

Jeff Johnson The Level System

Here's a great book to check out from our friend Jeff Johnson on the Stone/Morello level system. The book categorizes the four strokes that Joe Morello taught and how to apply them to drum set...

Re: Jazz drummer and composer Paul Motian dies

Great rendition of Stella. You know Bob when I listened to that, I got a link to "Pat Metheny talks about Kenny G" at the end . Are you trying to start something?:)

Kenny G would not have survived...

Definitely a character. I have a couple stories about him. That's him in my avatar.

Re: The birth of heavy metal

I've been watching the Sam Dunn special on VH1 classic Metal the Evolution. I liked part one and picked up a few interesting facts that I didn't know, notably that Ike Turner dropped his amp from the...

Re: Lou Reed & Metallica :(

I guess you have to read between the lines of what I am saying.

1) I don't think Metallica was ever as good as the progressive rock that I grew up with in the 1970s no matter how many threes or...

Re: Lou Reed & Metallica :(

It's really an age thing. I grew up listening to Led Zep and Deep Purple so I always loved great rock singers, or maybe I just have a very limited understanding of what makes a great rock singer. I...

Re: Lou Reed & Metallica :(

I haven't seen her yet, but she comes through The Blue Note once or twice year and always has top notch musicians with her. She did a duet stint with Chick Corea and I believe another with Herbie...

Re: Drum Clinic Tips?

I learned to always go to a clinic with a question. Ask Stanton about rolls, that's a good one for him.

The other thing you can do is print an 8 x 12 photo of Stanton at your local drug store and...

Re: Lou Reed & Metallica :(

Let's go through Metallica albums one by one and see who actually sings more off tone notes, James or Lou. In all fairness through, and to not seem like a total dick, there is an element of theater...

Re: Lou Reed & Metallica :(

Yeah, I think he studied with Satriani. Satch thinks he's great, what do I know? I actually have a story about Kirk.

When I graduated college I moved out west and was taking some classes at SF...

Re: Lou Reed & Metallica :(

I was waiting for you to say something, but that was quick. People may like or dislike Metallica, and they are huge and influential, but as musicians they suck. The thing is that I can be the asshole...

Re: Kids and Counting

I guess the point that broke the camel's back was the other day when I was teaching a kid something in three and he was having trouble. He got through it but I just wanted him to count with me,...

Re: Lou Reed & Metallica :(

My point is that you probably don't listen to much Metallica either. And Lou Reed's legacy was never as a master musician, but as a lyricist who portrayed aspects of life that most did not write...

Re: Lou Reed & Metallica :(

It seemed to me to be a logical pair from the beginning, the godfather of Punk and the greatest progenitors of Thrash. I think it sounds exactly like one would expect. People are not going to like it...

Andy, this one comes under the heading , it's so bad it's good. :)

The Velvet Underground got its start when John Cale left The dream syndicate, a band prefaced proudly on emancipating noise. The...

Kids and Counting

I've wonder about this for so long and may have asked this before but what is it with kids and counting out loud. I have had many students over the years who just will not count, they "feel stupid"...

Re: Should all drummers learn piano?

It is a good idea for musicians to have a secondary instrument. Piano is a good one because you have harmony going on so you learn a bit about music from that perspective. Guitar is another good one....

Larry Mullen, Jr.

It's called a "delayed back beat" as well.

there is no absolute beat, metronomic sync that defines music. You can play on, ahead (in front of) the beat, or on the beat. But...

What link are you talking about? The Gottfridsson book? It's possible that he over dubbed the Tony Sheridan recordings, I could be convinced that he 'overdubbed' Kansas City, Ain't She Sweet and...
