Re: China cymal placement

In a trad 2-up, 1-down I like it to the left of my hats.

Play open-handed: very reachable
Play cross-stick: a bit out of the way but a cymbal that doesn't need to be RIGHT THERE

Re: Jazz Dynamics

Being a rock drummer when I was younger, I was BLOWN AWAY by how much of a difference it made when I:

Re: Double Bass Beginner/15 years playing

This whipped me into shape. From a hippie, flowery drummer to a metal machine in weeks.

Re: The valleys ?

Sometimes I have days where I find the drumkit to just be a very noisy and cumbersome instrument. I look at it's overall construction and feel like drum manufacturers still haven't figured out how to...

Just watched that video for Monkey Chant.

Re: Worst bass drum sound ever?

Over triggered stuff in music that isn't even fast enough to justify needing that type of definition.

You know...
Ugh. Those mid-tempo metalcore beats with a real simple hand pattern and...

Re: Kick Drum: Bigger Depth vs Bigger Height

But you can also tune a 24 the "old school" way -- medium/tight batter and reso heads, felt strips for muffling -- and get that Bonham-esque sound. Great if you're recording a roomy, boomy drum...

Re: What is the most hilarious question someone has asked you about drums/drumming?

He was joking, but...

Friend of a guitarist came into our jam room, saw the other kids massive metal kit compared to my 4-piece and asked "Does that mean he's better?"

"Nah, he's like the guy...

State the name of an object, then play to it.

Fun exercise:

On your throne, say a single word, out loud.
Capture it's essence with your playing.

Start with an animal/plant/person/place that you love, for easy inspiration.

Move on to...

Re: "Smaller Kit Syndrome"

In music where I really get into the texture of each drum and cymbal I find that a small kit works wonderfully. (kick, snare, hat, cymbal)

In music where each drum/cymbal is a "sound effect"...

Re: When a student gets too good too quickly

When I started out as a 12 year old, I wanted to learn metal and punk music.

By 19 I was (of my own choice) getting deeper into jazz, afro-cuban, funk etc.

I probably wouldn't have enjoyed...

For those of you have know a bit about Black Panther snares..

Tried out one at a shop today. 13x6, Black, Wood. Sounded pretty great!

It was still in the box but there wasn't specific info on it. I want to say it was
around... 120-150$ US. Looked at their...

Re: Need Punk Drum Beats!

- Simple, tight tom licks, keeping time with hi hat pedal and kick
- Very consistent sticking.
- Clean up your kick drum triplets and doubles.

Punk is so vague. Sometimes going outside of a...

I really dig it for light stuff, but I LOVE using it as a huge crash/ride when
I'm getting into the sludgy, psychedelic music. Nice wall of...

Re: Just can't seem to relax...

I used to get these real bad panic attacks when I was 19-20.
I'd lose all sensation in my limbs, my chest would tighten, mouth dry,
throat closed, tunnel vision... absolutely overcome with a sense...
