Re: Walk this way - need advice on technique

After a couple of hours practicing left handed hi-hats I'm starting to get the hang of it. Think I'll leave the cow bell where it is.
I'm loving this track!

Walk this way - need advice on technique

Hi folks I need your advice please on the correct approach to this song.

My main issue is with the cow bell. I have it positioned on the bass drum so it's central to me.
The difficulty I have is...

Re: Ok need some help here.

Totally agree with this, and would like to add that the quality of teachers varies a lot. Be careful who you choose.
Be very clear in deciding what your goals are, and communicate this to the...

Where do you store your drums?

My drum kit is permanently located in my garage, except when I'm on a gig of course. However the garage environment can get pretty damp as it doesn't have central heating like the house. I've noticed...

Re: How to mic up drum kit for live performances

Thanks Bermuda. We're talking 'wall of guitar sound' here playing heavy rock songs, so from what you've said, and I tend to agree, that overhead mics will just boost this even more. So I'm going with...

How to mic up drum kit for live performances

I'm just looking for some advice on the best way to mic up my kit. At the moment I have a kick drum mic and a condenser mic.

A lot of the information I've found on the web advocates putting mics...

Re: Pearl Forum Rock or Mapex M Birch? Which would you choose?

Yeah I noticed on the pic they are upside down. Spot the rookie eh? :)

All I know is that I'm delighted with the way my kit sounds. Bass in particular sounds good. Snare is also better than I...

Re: Pearl Forum Rock or Mapex M Birch? Which would you choose?

Thanks for all the comments. I bought the Mapex kit, and I'm well pleased with it. Completely blows away my old kit. Impressed with the build quality of the hardware, stands etc very substantial....

Re: Pearl Forum Rock or Mapex M Birch? Which would you choose?

Thanks, great advice there. It's clear I have a lot to learn.

If I think back to my last gig though, one comment afterwards from someone in the audience was, we couldn't hear the drums much....

Re: Pearl Forum Rock or Mapex M Birch? Which would you choose?

Do they sound better? To my untrained ear there is little difference between any of the kits I try. Ok some toms sound louder, but I'm not sure exactly what I should be listening for.

I can...

Re: Pearl Forum Rock or Mapex M Birch? Which would you choose?

Thanks. I was looking for some confirmation that the Mapex is worth the extra money. It really does look the business with the Hermosa Fade finish.
I can afford to buy it, but whether my talent...

Re: Volume inbalance 18" kick

Sounds familiar.
The guys in the band I'm in never turn their amps down from 11. Last gig we played I mic'd up the bass drum. You can only hit the thing so hard..

Pearl Forum Rock or Mapex M Birch? Which would you choose?

I am looking to buy a kit for use in a rock band. It needs to have a really punchy solid sound to cut through heavy guitar. I have been able to borrow a Pearl Export kit, which I really liked.

Re: Moving around the kit and improvising

Some songs I listen to, and I can't even tell what the drummer is playing. I just know it sounds slick and fits well in the song.
When playing a cover, do people listen to and copy the original...

Re: Moving around the kit and improvising

Thanks for the comments and links. Good stuff.
You mentioned a very good point Kettles about empty space. Sometimes less is more. I think when first starting, you feel the need to fill every...

Moving around the kit and improvising

As an inexperienced drum I'm finding it difficult to move around the kit to do interesting fills. I'm also not great at improvising music, and my background is very much as music reader. I know this...

Re: How to play really quick hi-hat?

Thanks guys that's useful. Seems like there's more than one way to do this, so I guess it's just a question of finding the right way for me. One thing's for sure though, it will take a lot of...

Hi folks,

I'm trying to play 'Ever fallen in love' by the Buzzcocks. It's a really quick tempo and requires some fast work on the hi-hat.
I'm finding it difficult to maintain this without fatigue...
