I addition to the other suggestions, I would recommend playing the double stroke roll with accents on the second stroke of each hand (lL rR), like the original NARD rudiment is written. It will help...

In addition to locking in with the bass, I always try to listen to whomever has the melody in order to accompany appropriately.

I also focus on using a relaxed grip in order to keep a good groove.
