1. How many bands are you in?

Just one right now.

Re: What's with The Who?

Wait wait wait. I'm starting to think that you might not actually like the Who.

Re: What's with The Who?

But in Pollock's case it was the technique itself, not the lack of technique. You might be right that people don't really go "wow that Keith Moon trailblazed the Moonie technique" but people who...

Re: Fast rolls and getting around the kit

I feel like I've always been there, just with no sense of rebound or good single-stroke rolls down the toms - so thanks for starting the thread and I'll be checking the replies too.

As someone...

Re: The virtues of gigging - or otherwise

Nothing wrong with finding a new direction for part of your life at any point, but I'd miss yr youtube channel.

Do you feel like it'd be too difficult to find new like-minded people to make music...

Re: An idea - honest opinions sought.

Hope you don't mind me commenting without actually addressing the idea you're asking about, but I want to make a side note: whenever you take a picture of the drums the landscape behind them is...

Re: Music and mathematics

I was in a band with a guy once, great guitarist, had a lot of background in theory. The rest of us never learned much about it, so were talking about how he used it and he sort of shrugged and said...

Re: Music and mathematics

Gotta be music, but I wonder if we didn't start calling it "music" until after we figured out the math. Maybe it was more naturalistic before that. Surely there's an anthropologist on the forum?

Re: Music and mathematics

Yeah, but I'm curious what you think, too. I mean you can quantify a lot about any composition, say that mathematics explains a lot of the things you can observe or understand about a set or time...

Re: Music and mathematics

You'd be talking music theory if you were talking strict mathematical associations, right?

I'm not sure if I understand the question correctly; it seems to suggest a lot of other ones: are...

Ah no it's not like that. It's a good question, I've thought about it a lot.

Re: Bar bands, what's more important...

This, yeah, #2. I don't care who I'm playing in front of and what they're thinking. We're in a bar, they're all adults, I assume they're old enough to figure out where the door is if they don't like...

Re: Art and Music Professions worth Fighting For

& this perspective has historical support - Western culture didn't always think of the commodity value of an act, art, or craft as creating its virtue. It's a modern discussion, certainly, but...

Re: Art and Music Professions worth Fighting For

Not sure who's unaware of the need to pay for goods and services in - well, I guess you're referring to a specific Western society. But the point here is that people do, in fact, say "one cannot or...

Re: Art and Music Professions worth Fighting For

Totally agree. The "STEM good, Arts bad" argument is more than personal choice, too: it's a policy idea, one that goes a long way towards determining funding for programs. In a way, we're telling...

Re: any love for Topper ?

"Rock the Casbah" is pretty representative, and you hear it everywhere. You can hear him on "Train in Vain," "Should I Stay or Should I Go," "London Calling" which are easy to find. But I'd just buy...

Re: any love for Topper ?

Is it? From what I've read he was mostly a heroin addict and a drunk and stayed in music for a while to support that. He's worked with Jones recently (w/ Billy Bragg) and in his post-BAD side...

Re: Forum psychology

Yes, but I guess I'd say that sameness - the understanding of common goals and practices - is what gives a community its identity. People come to places like this to answer the question of "what kind...

Re: A practice idea - subdivisions as applied to the drumkit

Just wanted to pitch in some 'thanks' for the thread - I've been practicing time tables a lot lately and it's cool to see where I might go with it.

Re: Multi-Band drummers, How do you choose your projects?

I've rarely been in a situation where two bands I'm in are touring bands, but I have been in bands where I wasn't so into the music. So 90% of any decisions I make are based on whether I can see...

Re: The non-metal double bass thread

I'm glad someone brought Matthew James Thomas up. Similar to JF is God is an Astronaut, whose drummer also generally saves the double bass stuff for the end of the songs.

GI's Peter Moffett...

Yeah, I'm with you, I would've told them no, too. And if yes I'd definitely ask for a release form so that you know if they're going to use the tape afterwards. You should never allow your likeness...

Re: My new line of custom cymbal stands.

I saw Yoshida from Ruins stick a plastic water-cooler jug into a milk crate and use it as a tom, and a bunch of other rigged stuff, I guess a full set wasn't around. Sounded great though!

I've...
