Re: Good jazz books

It's extremely important to build as big of a sound library (things heard) as possible...IOW listen, listen, listen to as much jazz music as possible. Don't underestimate how important this is. A...

This is my last drop in price. If you're interested, now would be the time since I'm basically giving it away. It's a fantastic piece of equipment, but I really need the money so...

Re: How to practice rudiments efficiently?

Hey, that looks interesting. I hadn't seen that before. It's not the same thing, but I'm sure it's good.

On the Henry Adler video, he explains to the viewer, and then demonstrates how to teach it...

Re: Some of my old drum notes and ideas

This "system" was derived from a James Brown rhythm. The middle line is for the Snare, the BD is on the lowest line (only one note), the x-headed notes on the lowest line are for HH w/foot, and the...

Re: Some of my old drum notes and ideas

Simple example of translating the word "chaos" to morse code, then translating the morse code to the drumset. (morse code was slowed down and the pitch lowered using the website mentioned earlier)

Re: Some of my old drum notes and ideas

This is an interesting tool to hear text translated to morse code. Plus, in the Advance Controls section, you can adjust the pitch, speed, etc. (definitely lower the pitch). Very interesting tool.

Re: Some of my old drum notes and ideas

Thanks, I'm glad you find it interesting!

Well, I never really explored this too much, it's just an idea that I documented. I planned on getting back to it, but you know how that goes sometimes....

Re: Some of my old drum notes and ideas

Okay, here's a weird one: apply the rhythms of morse code to drumming. :P

I think of Terry Bozzio on this one. I could see him doing this with one of his ostinato-type solos. Maybe he's already...

Re: Some of my old drum notes and ideas

I think it's because of the low resolution of the notation graphics. I used some software that I had written to generate parts of the notation, and then I compiled the parts to make the final result....

Re: Some of my old drum notes and ideas

Hey, thanks for checking it out!

Yeah, the cards forced me to really condense any idea I wanted to document. At some point I ran out of cards and just switched to whatever was handy (postit notes,...

Re: Should I count the beats

I think it's important to learn to count while playing because there are times where it will be crucial to being able to keep your place in the music. It's a skill and it won't benefit you unless...

Re: Some of my old drum notes and ideas

This is a transcription of something Dennis Chambers played in his "Serious Moves" video. I thought it sounded pretty cool and decided to use it as a Gary Chester "system" (see Gary Chester's "The...

Re: I need some help with all state jazz

If I was in your situation, I would focus on demonstrating solid, basic grooves in those different styles. I think it would be a mistake to try and impress them with something intricate and "noisy"....

Re: A Personal Practice Session That Transcends You...

Yeah, I love those moments! I remember when I first learned to close a finger-controlled double stroke roll. When it finally came together it was like magic, the sticks seemed to be floating. All of...

Re: How to practice rudiments efficiently?

The best method to approach rudiments that I've encountered was taught on a VHS video by Henry Adler (Hand Development Technique). I don't know if this is even still available, but if you can find...

Re: Some of my old drum notes and ideas

This is an idea for a rhythmic modulation. The rhythms at the top and bottom share some common notes (rhythmically). They both sound the same at their beginning.

The first four beats of the top...

Re: Some of my drum notes and ideas

This exercise helps to develop both wrist- and finger-controlled double strokes, simultaneously. It represents a finger-controlled double within a wrist-controlled double.

Some of my drum notes and ideas

I've been doing some cleaning up and came across all of my old drumming notes and thought I would share some of them. Be aware that some of them can be a bit odd, but they seemed interesting enough...
