Re: Best drums under $1500?

Without question. At that price you have to purchase used.

Re: Favorite throw off and why?

You said it. I had bolts snap off or strip like they were made of balsa wood. I absolutely could not believe how cheap the nuts and bolts in my Gretsch USA Custom drums were. After swapping out the...

Re: Black beauty snare wires snapped.

It's to even the tension across the tab where the wires are soldered. Otherwise, the wires will pull unevenly and the wires will tend to keep breaking in succession. It should also even out the...

Re: Favorite throw off and why?

The latest Yamaha and Tama strainers are very nice. The latest Sonor Dual Glide System is quite nice too, if not somewhat bulky. Just make sure that BOTH sides are fully adjustable, both strainer and...

Re: Favorite floor tom size and why?

I have a 14x14 and a 16x16, but if I were sure that the legs would be mounted low enough, I would have opted for 14x12 and 16x14. The slightly shallower size sounds rounder and punchier to me.

Re: Pearl Roadshow Jazz Kit

I purchased an equally inexpensive Tama kit years ago for practice purposes. I had no expectation as far as quality let alone sound/tone, but boy, was I surprised. Once I put good heads on the kit,...

Re: Double lugs vs single lugs

If the lug accepts tension rods on both sides, it is better equipped to handle higher tensions. If the lug only accepts a tension rod on one side, a highly tensioned bolt will stress the shell.

Re: Can't decide on a rack tom size for a jazz kit

A 10" in that position needs to be tensioned looser to reduce snare buzz, whereas the 12" can be tensioned just perfectly with minimal snare buzz. If you're using the kit to play jazz, you'll most...

Re: GRETSCH BROOKLYN mediocre bad quality?

I agree completely. I had the same experience with screws/bolts on a Gretsch USA Custom snare drum.

Re: Why doesn't anyone make quieter drums?

Mezzo is Italian for "half" or "middle". Mezzo forte would be half as loud as forte. I wonder why they never uses "double" (or doppio) as a prefix to indicate twice as loud? Instead, they just repeat...

Re: Help Please: Adjusting Throwoff on Snare

Gretsch recently reintroduced that Micro-Sensitive strainer system. It has adjustments on both sides.

Re: Buying a Jazz Kit. Help Me.

Yeah, it's hard to find shallower bass drums these days. I prefer 16" for a 22" and 14" for anything smaller. The only problem with 14" depth is when you have the tom mount installed on the bass...

Re: Buying a Jazz Kit. Help Me.

I had that Gretsch kit briefly. It sounds okay, but nowhere near top quality (even with better heads). I would suggest it for someone's "rehearsal" set, but not for serious gigs or recordings. I got...

Re: LM402 Lust

Best one I ever played was a Super Sensitive. Sold it 'cause replacing the wires was too expensive.
