Re: What makes music classic, timeless?

Timeless? Classic?

Music that is universally admired or enjoyed regardless of who is enjoying or admiring the content.

It could be the music, the lyrics, the performers or some combination,...

Re: Kind of an odd question?

Strangely, I practice with my "boom box" AND headphones. I wiggle the headphones' 1/8 inch mini-stereo plug into the boom box jack - not all the way though - and get stereo output to both speakers...

Re: RIP Aker Bilk

Not just 'Acker Bilk," but "Mr. Acker Bilk."

Good memories. Mom and Dad had his albums when I was a kid. I'd bet that if I went spelunking in Dad's basement, those old albums would turn up.

Re: Deceptively cool and challenging drum tracks...

You may have an absolute ball with Linda Ronstadt's version of "Love is a Rose."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ed2r8cAyvEo

I'm pretty sure it's Russ Kunkle on drums. Easy to follow but tough...

Re: Anyone suggest good drum bags?

Another here too. I originally purchased them as H&B bags are made in USA, only to find out these are made in China. One anomaly in the stitching on one of six bags I own - does not affect the...

Re: That moment.....when the band are 'on it'....

Maybe I'm mis-quoting, and maybe I really don't want to know, but I have to ask: did the crowd want more of your drumming or did they want you to disrobe?!?

I guess you had to be there to know...

Re: Extra sharp chisel 1 - finger 0 :(

Bloody Hell!

Whoops, I mean Bloody Finger!

My old Dad always said that it's the dull tool that causes an injury - it forces YOU to do the work instead of the tool, which forces the tool into...

Re: Advice on drum additions

+1 on what Kamak and James said.

Don't forget to experiment with tuning your mounted toms - you can cover a lot of territory with heads and tuning. After you play a while, you'll know how to...

Re: "Play something." What do you play?

I fire back, "Name a song where you know the drum part and I'll give it a whack." Followed quickly by, "Playing the drum part of a song is like eating a sandwich with no filler - it's just bread. ...

Re: Hi hats and air lock, no luck.

I agree with everyone who said it's something mechanical. I'd probably replace the bottom sleeve and both felts or maybe try grommets.

But the only known permanent cure to vapor locking hats is...

Re: Musical artists whose death saddened you.

Gary Thain of Uriah Heep and Tommy Bolin.

Both were masters of their respective instruments.

I can't imagine how their careers would have progressed if they were still both alive.

Re: Annoying Sounds

Funny - Doc Watso hasn't chimed in yet. Please allow me a feeble attempt to reveal the flip side of Uncle Larry's feel-good coin.

You've been drumming for 18 months?!? If you can't play as well...

Re: 100 Most Influential Drummers......Who The Hell Are They?

The poster designer seems to be in university in Belgium.

I'm betting the poster is a one-off college project and others don't exist or aren't widely distributed.

Sadly the photos are a bit out...

Re: Drummers who don't use cymbal stoppers

I don't hit hard, but do use 1/4 inch thick felts on top with Tama plastic wingnuts at the very top of the thread. These:

Re: The "I wish I hadn't opened my big mouth" thread ;)

You could always reposition a boulder or two in your garden and "drop" one on your big toe.

"Gee, I'd love to play, but my toe is knackered - I'll have to sit this one out. Maybe next year?!?

Re: Favorite Song to Rock out To?

Tops on my list is Toto's Hold the Line.

Jeff Porcaro on "Hold the Line", in a 1988 interview with Modern Drummer:

"That was me trying to play like Sly Stone's original drummer, Greg Errico,...

Re: Looking for songs with straight in the pocket drumming.

CCR seems to fit that bill most of the time. Some syncopated stuff now and then, but typical straight four-on-the-floor.

Re: Best Advice You've Been Given

"Measure twice; cut once."

Dad (now 86 years old)

Apparently I listened. I've been a metrologist for the past 31 years and I'm still measuring.

Re: Whats the weirdest thing you ever broke on your kit during a gig?

I haven't had gear break during a show (not a steady gigger), but did did lose power to an outdoor stage in the middle of "Margaritaville." The acoustic guitar and I played right through to the end...

Re: How much air is in between your hi-hats?

Bottom hat tilted toward me about 1/4 inch (6 mm) lower than the back. When at rest, the back of the hats are about 3/4 inch (20 mm) apart; with my foot on the pedal, that distance closes to about...

Re: What is resonance, & why does it matter.

Does "timber species" = "timbre species"?

Likely the first 'drum' was a hollow log, with the doppler effect compressing the air to act as a head. So, even a hollow log doesn't exhibit the pure...

Between the federal and state governments, I owe $33 USD. When I want something, I just buy it - no need to wait for some return of over-paid taxes.

Of course, all purchases over $50 must be...

Re: Drumming Idiosyncrasies

At first I thought that was weird, but then I realized that I can't drum without my capon.

Sorry, MZ, I used to be a butcher in a past life... ;-)
