Re: Need my kick drum louder

Ports reduce acoustic projection. Change your reso and tune it up if you want to maximize presence. If you have a pillow in there, pull it out. It's a drum. Let it be what it is and it will do what...

Re: why do alot of drummers only use 2 toms?

Been playing a six-piece kit, recently scaled down for mobility and find that two toms, a twin-pedal bass and a snare can keep you plenty busy rockin' the house. Sometimes less is more.

Is the jar of Pearl Jam...

Half empty, or half full?

Re: Funny/weird things that happened when drumming?

Last night at band practice, while warming up, we rocked the glass cover off an overhead light fixture in my basement. It fell a few feet to my right, hit the corner of an amp and exploded into...

Re: Time keepers or creative drummers

In rock music, it's the rhythm section that moves the audience while the frontmen and other musicians entertain them.

That's the way I see it.

Re: Time keepers or creative drummers

Love your attitude, brother. That's the spirit of a real drummer, imo. I've clapped my hands, played my beer glass with a key and even clicked billiard balls at jam sessions. And my contributions...

Re: When The Levee Breaks drum beat

From Wikipedia:

"According to Page, the song's structure "was a riff that I'd been working on, but Bonzo's drum sound really makes a difference on that point."[4] The famous drum performance was...

Re: Another Rainbow?

Rainbow without Dio and Blackmore?

Sounds like Black Sabbath without Ozzy... In other words, a commercial venture capitalizing on the name recognition of another product.

(BTW, I loved Black...

Re: Kinda miss those 80's kits!!

I wasn't gigging in the 80s but I was going to a lot of rock concerts. Big kits were in. Rock and metal is big on drums in general, but I think a lot of it has to do with stage presence. Alex Van...

Re: 'Bouncing' the sticks

You have to learn to control and assist the bounce. You do use it, but you can't rely on it. The rebound from each drum is different and it actually varies on any one drum according to when your...

Re: Controlling tempo...

This is gospel, imo. At least it is as applies to my own drumming.

Many times I feel like I'm ON IT - and then I listen to a recording and I'm disappointed with what I hear. Don't get me wrong -...

Re: What Color For New Yamahas?

You certainly have a lot of options, but I can't tell from the color patches on that website what the kit will actually look like.

You'll love whatever you end up with...

Re: Playing drums in space?

I nominate this as one of the most asinine threads ever.

You'd have to be strapped down to play in space.

And I love the pic of Dolmayan in the pool. Priceless.

But, this is a stupid...

Re: Hi-hat vs. ride

Chris Adler from Lamb of God uses the ride pretty extensively and to good effect. Especially the bell.

I think I use it about half the time.

With double-bass work, the hats are open because I...

Re: Any Wierd Drum Habits???

I stare at my bassist's fingers a lot, as he's pluckin' the strings.

Re: Drums. Art or Science?

Drumming is a musical endeavor, and therefore, imo, an ART. It is totally subjective and intuitive. There is no formula for "correct" or "right." Without a formula or any possibility of an objective...

Re: Problems with GROOVE!!

It looks like your snare is positioned relatively high - or perhaps your seat is low - forcing you to crane your wrists a bit to get up over your stuff.

Otherwise, your timing doesn't seem to be...

Re: Ghost Notes

Yeah, you need to FEEL them. I play ghost notes on the snare mostly by accident but they work well when they come through. It's one of those things - like Zen enlightenment - that will elude you if...
