Re: How to become a fairly well-known Session Drummer

For sure, I've never been one but how about playing on lots of sessions and getting to know
lots of people.

Re: Would you uproot to go where the music is?

I've always lived where the music is so I never had to uproot. I have moved many times and
lived in quite a few states but each move was to the next music scene. There are plenty of
smaller scenes...

Re: Why ya' gotta be so dark?

I've gotten to play on a lot of 50's and 60's K's. While I didn't like most of them, the cymbals
that were great were just that! I have never played on any older K that had as much wash
as the K...

Re: Forced to retire?

I play guitar and drums and you might want to pick up a guitar and learn to play some rhythm
guitar to join in the fun. Your time would be better than most rhythm guitar players out there.

Re: Jazz Kit Idea

I play small group jazz exclusively these days. I like smaller drum sizes too (18" bass) etc
but so long as the drums are quality, I don't concern myself too much with them because
I can tune them...

Re: ...for the jazz cats ...

In the 1950's into the 60's a lot of places in Chicago had lunchtime groups with grand piano, acoustic upright bass, and a drummer playing a snare and hihat. As a young drummer I always wondered what...

Re: What are your stories of when people found out you are drummer?

1. I'm glad I don't live near you.
2. Your neighbors must love you.
3. I have a friend who plays guitar really well.

Re: How long before we 3D print drum gear?

I need a 3D printout of "Tony's Ride Cymbal" because right now my ride cymbal sounds
exactly like Tony's but only when he isn't playing it.

Re: Guitar Center Musician's Expo

Yep, that's the same one I played. I prefer the modern (albeit old style) necks because in the
50's the Gibson factory gave "wide berth" to the luthiers making the necks. That's why
some are very...

Re: Guitar Center Musician's Expo

Local 5 Star drum store just got some Kerope's in...tried them all. Interesting. One really stood out. Also played a recent ES175 Gibson replica through an amp and really liked it compared to the...

Re: My bizarre, ego-destroying experience

I kept reading on down wondering how I might respond, and then TRUMPET PLAYER!
In my experience, good trumpet players are usually very bright but can be very cocky...amongst the cockiest of...

Re: Tommy Igoe - State of education

I just loved the photos in the method books I had in the 50's, with the "really old guys" standing in front of a snare drum and holding there sticks in all kinds of positions and always

Re: How do you guys learn songs ?

I try and find as many different recordings of the song as I can and then listen, repeatedly when necessary. If there is a section that is difficult, I'll work on bits and pieces in slow motion until...

Re: slow music down tool

You've received a lot of advice so here's a bit of history and why it is great to want to "slow down music today" vs yesteryear. With the digitization of music, it is possible to slow the music down...

Re: The Poinciana Beat

I didn't look at your link but there is a transcription to the drum part Vernel played with Ahmad
Jamal in Vernel's method book. He varied the beat to better accompany the varying bass line.

Re: Who Are The Most Melodic Drummers?

The first name that came to mind has been mentioned repeatedly. Another vote for
