Re: Completely out of touch old fart irrelevant opinion - but,

Musicians play music live, either composed or improv. DJs present pre-recorded music to other people. Some people fit more than one of these categories.[/quote]

Yes, we've been trying to parse...

Re: Drummers that can't tune drums.

Thanks Evolving Machine - you covered everything for me. When I started out it was fashionable to dampen the hell out of everything. That was the "pro" sound every drummer I knew was trying to...

Re: Completely out of touch old fart irrelevant opinion - but,

Hmm, are 70s covers really all we want to play?

Live local-level rock bands are not allowed to be original, unconventional or to play non-dance music unless they are brilliant or riding the wave...

Re: Is this suspicious?

A question about piracy. What do you guys think of people selling their old CDs? Should this be disallowed because the artist gains no benefit? How does it differ to the spammer? (legit product or...

Re: Completely out of touch old fart irrelevant opinion - but,

Playing an acoustic kit requires a mix of the physical and mental.

Playing sequencer requires a lot less physical skill but needs a lot of mental skills not used in acoustic kit playing.

I...

Re: Okay, if all tone comes "from the player's hands"

Hands certainly do have something to do with the process of tone production. Feet too.

Re: Worst song ever

Agree, good list but Bobby McFerrin is a great talent https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shWrMVSj_hk

Also have no problem with Wham's Wake Me Up Before You Go Go which I find so bad it's good.

Re: Worst song ever

You know what really cheeses me off? The "music" played in gyms. I'd be a lot fitter if they played real music. It's totally offal!

I'd even rather They Built This City and Final Countdown!

Re: Worst song ever

Otto, my man, you speak the truth. Cowbell man and others agree.

I think this may be the winner. To be fair, it's mainly the chorus that rankles. I remember being astonished at the crassness of...

Re: Ringo's Drumming: Harder Than It Looks

Hilarious run of conversation. Henri, that's a classic!! May I put in a request for another one just like that with a Bernard Purdie mask? :) :) :)

After that I want a Mike Portnoy mask hehehe

Re: The Speed Obsession

Here's a jaw dropping performance on acoustic guitar without a whole lot of shredding - sheer musical mastery and imagination https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nY7GnAq6Znw

Another example, which...

Re: The Speed Obsession

DED, I know what you mean about the Projeckts, and I say that as an old Crimmo tragic. They came to Sydney not so long ago but I checked out a live vid by the same lineup. I don't enjoy relentless...

Re: The Speed Obsession

True. I was way into speed in my mid/late teens. Gradually the intensity and speed that gave me rush started sounding like a boring racket and by my 40s simply feels like an assault. There was a...

Re: The Speed Obsession

I doubt there's one answer, Abe. Competition stems from animal impulses but it's partially existential, partially genetic, partially social. Striving is part of it - our natural growth and learning...

Re: Yolanda Charles on drummers! :)

I agree with Yolanda - ears are the crux of the biscuit. Listenig is easier said than done. My ears wouldn't have been fast enough to latch onto that last bassline the way Aaron did - very cool.

Re: Worst idea in Drumming

I love lightweight stands and have a few Dixons holding up my cymbals :) I'm not playing in a big loud rock band these days and the stands have never even looked like wobbling, let alone looked like...

Re: Audio only snare drum comparison between...

True, you have to leave them open or equally dampened to compare them. It makes clear just how resonant Gurus are, though it didn't sound like the ones in Andy's clips.

My point was that, with...

Re: Audio only snare drum comparison between...

Heh, I would muffle or retune a drum ringing to the level of the Guru though that ring would largely disappear in your bands, probably only being noticed in sparse sections like in that great Piss...

Re: I Play Better When I Donít Practice

Actually Larry, if I don't play on the kit every day, even if for a few minutes, it takes me longer to warm into the task next time I play. The pad helps me a bit in that respect, but not much.
