Re: First Audition

A couple of things that I always keep in mind....
1) Take the music seriously, but treat the audition like a "jam" - you're going there to hang out, play some music, and have some fun.
2) ...

Re: Rock Gigs Not Very Rock Anymore?

I guess it depends on the definition of "gig" and/or "show". I haven't been to a concert (where the sole purpose is to see/hear the band) in quite awhile. Most of the gigs that I attend or play...

Re: Graeme Edge

I've been on a quest recently to find out what his ride cymbal was "back in the day", like on "Nights in White Satin". I love the sound and the way it opens up and builds along with the crescendo...

Re: Argument with Guitarist over time signature

Tell your guitarist it doesn't matter - the bass player is going to speed up and wreck it anyway. Then go have a beer!

Re: DTX500 Question

I'm coming from the dtxtreme iis world here so I could be wrong, but ...... aside from foot splash, the purpose of the pedal is to control the sound you get when you strike a (hi-hat) pad (ie full...

Re: Newest tools

Nice!. That setup would have my brain so knotted up I'd end up playing a polka beat on every song.

Re: How do you guys learn songs ?

Repetitive listening. I've never had to actually sit at the kit to work anything out.

Re: Drum volume

You're focusing on the equipment, but have you thought about / tried summoning more force from your wrists and/or fingers?

Re: Your Holy Grail

Pearl Syncussion. It came out in the early 80's. It was an electronic brain with 2 pads. Not much for realistic drum sounds, but awesome for special effects (handclap, thunder crash, classic...

Re: Question about beater buzz.

I play an 18x22 with a ported reso. Both heads are JAW. Also heel-up and bury the beater, and I get the same buzz.

You might try Guitar Center's (online) used gear section.

Re: What are your favourite recorded drumsounds?

I think my all-time favorite is still Kansas - Leftoverture. Dream Theater (at least the early stuff - I haven't listened to them lately), and Liquid Tension Experiment.

Re: Switched my gigging kit from Pearl to PDP

I keep mine tuned fairly low, and I very rarely have to re-tune. Mine live in my car too. They spent half their life in York, PA and now they're in Balto, MD. No worries.

Re: Switched my gigging kit from Pearl to PDP

Larry, they offered a 7x8 rack tom and a 14x16 (legged) floor tom as add-ons. It took me forever to find the floor tom. There seems to be quite a few available in blue onyx, but the white ones are...

Re: Switched my gigging kit from Pearl to PDP

I LOVE my PDP CX's (same color). I've had them since around 2004(?) I'm constantly getting compliments on the sound from other musicians, audience, and sound guys. The only problem I've ever had...

Re: In Search of Higher Pitched Sounds...

I have a PDP CX kit with 10, 12, and 14 toms. I wanted a voice higher than my 10, so I went with the PDP/DW 10" piccolo. It fits perfectly sonically and physically - it's shallower than a tom, so...

Re: finding the sweet spot on the shell?

I could be wrong, but it seems to me that in order to fire a trigger from the shell, you'd have to set the sensitivity so hot that you'll be picking up false hits from all over the place. Yes? No?

Re: Left handed on a "normal" setup / Openhanded

I play exactly like you do. Have been for 30 years give or take. I'm self-taught (on the kit) and nobody ever told/showed me any different. From the outset, I moved my ride over to left, above my...

Re: 17 practice tips that relate to drums I got from loads of violin video-lessons on practice

Billy Ward talks about this concept in "Big Time." Not necessarily pertaining to setting a metronome, but setting your internal clock. For a slow piece, it helps to count/feel more subdivisions. ...

Re: A song sprung on you out of the blue?

I was in a classic rock cover band, and the members meshed extremely well, like we could read each other's minds musically. We never used set lists, and unless I had to start the song, the guitarist...

Re: Bar owner double booked us!! RANT!!

No, but we had had a situation with a Tex-Mex on the outskirts of Balto. We had 4 gigs on the books. They double-booked the 2nd one, then said they were canceling the remainder unless we reduced...

Re: Bar owner double booked us!! RANT!!

I've been bounced due to a double-booking a few times (always MY band - never the other guys). I also was cancelled from a street fair at the last the last minute due to impending bad weather, only...

Re: 8" PDP Cx tom

Yes. They offered an 8" rack and 16" floor as add-on's (if you didn't buy the full 7-pc kit upfront). I scoured ebay and CL daily for 2 years before I finally scored my CX floor tom in white onyx.
