Re: For those who play at church or not.

I used to play in my church and I absolutely hated playing behind the plexiglass wall. I could never get anyone to understand that the "unwanted sound" actually bounces back at me. At least I had...

Re: Real Life Whiplash

Eww... Definitely thrown them out.

Are those sticks the only place you found blood? Not to creep you out too much, but you might want to check the hardware, throne, etc.

Re: Rock albums with modern production and a great vintage drum sound

Definitely Clutch. I was riding around with my brother-in-law over the holidays, jamming to Clutch in his car. He has a really nice stereo system in his car and that was one of my first thoughts,...

Re: Is Don Henley relevant here?

That's probably because that isn't a real snare on that cut. It's a Senair snare drum. Apparently one of the first electronic snare drums. Supposedly, Henley liked it and decided to use it for...

That record from the Charlie Watts/Jim Keltner project.

Re: Why I Never Collected Famous People’s Autographs

I can see both sides of this.

For me, the autograph is sort of an "I'll never see you again." (I live in Nebraska, which isn't exactly a hotbed of music activity, at least not the folks I want to...

Re: So how's this for bitter?

That's pretty much how my unported head has been miced up. However, my bass drum sounds like it's tuned a little higher than yours. My reso is as you described but my batter side is pretty firm...

Re: Blues Drumming Done Right

Thanks for sharing that.

Fred Below is one of my heroes. I've probably stolen most of my stuff from him.

I wasn't totally aware that he was so frustrated to the point of almost quitting with...

Re: Ludwig legacy classic and vintage Ludwig bopsound?

I use my Ludwig Classic Maples in jazz and blues. They aren't that different from the Legacy's. I think most of the sound difference is in heads and tunings.

I found some sound samples at...

Re: Drum sizes for small venue

What he said...

I use my 20/12/14 for most gigs. I feel the drums have more...presence...than when I've used the 22/13/16. The bigger kit sounds meaty from my perspective but the smaller kit...

Re: So...where do you keep your spare sticks?

Nope. I am left-handed though. I play the kit right-handed. I just keep sticks on both sides of my kit. I never know which sticks are going to decide to take off flying.

Re: Tuning woes

Absolutely!

I am constantly tweaking my floor tom. That drum, more than any other it seems, changes sound from room to room.

Re: So...where do you keep your spare sticks?

That's where I keep left side sticks on one of my kits.

On my main gigging kit, I have stick holders on both sides of the kit, one on the hi-hat stand and one on my right side cymbal stand. I...

Re: Traditional grip for rock?

I use trad grip about 90% of the time. However, I don't play that much rock. Blues is as close as I get. I don't have any issues at all with it. Neither do several pros...

Check out Steve...

Re: That Erskine kit at NAMM

I was wondering about that. I remember him going on about the flat based stands. Apparently Tama's stands are better? I would like to see them come out with some flat based stuff. However, my OCD...

Re: Ludwig Classic Maple or Vistalite?

Just my opinion, but I think the Classic Maple would be more versatile.

Also, not that I have any experience with it, but I've heard that Vistalites can be a chore to tune.

Re: That Erskine kit at NAMM

Did I miss where/why Peter left DW?

As much as I like to see folks move away from DW, I'm just curious what the reasons were.

Re: Playing with people standing behind you

We set up something similar to this (minus the horn section) for a while at my old church. It was a nightmare. I couldn't see anyone. I couldn't see any signals from the bandleader or watch his...

Re: Ginger Baker Reacts to Passing of Jack Bruce

My thoughts exactly.

I wonder if that quote really came from Ginger, or his people.

Re: Good exercises to do away from the kit and pad?

You could always practice brushes on a newspaper too.

For the kids here, a "newspaper" is basically the internet made out of paper...
