Re: Another Simon Philips kick fan

Not sure what you mean? When I play jazz I use a felt head so there's no slapping, but for rock I use the plastic side. That creates a 'slappy' sound, it's a big ball of plastic hitting a big sheet...

Another Simon Phillips kick fan

I just wanted to post that I tried the Simon Philips thing - rolling up a towel and taping it to the inside of the batter head of your kick - and I was extremely dubious it would work because I'm...

Re: Bill Bachman's Drumworkout.com - One Week Free Access

Okay awesome, thanks for the response. Yeah I probably should have cheated and peeked ahead, but I got fascinated trying to fix my freestroke. Still just doing freestrokes and dribbling, third week...

Re: Bill Bachman's Drumworkout.com - One Week Free Access

Hi Bill, I tried the free week but didn't get past the first two lessons (in fact I'm still working on free stroke and free stroke dribbling, trying to get to 10k).

Quick question: on the first...

Re: Danny Seraphine

Maybe he's thinking of something like "War Pigs", which has a decidedly jazzy intro and some fun, crazy fills.

Re: When people ask you to 'play something', what do you play?

Ahh, that's because you're doing it wrong. It's Boom Snare, Boom BOOM Snare! :-P

Re: Danny Seraphine

Hmm. You mention "Old Days" (one of my most hated songs, I don't know if anybody could have saved that Peter Cetera nonsense). Do you find Seraphine's drumming to be bad on all, or most songs? Like...

Re: When Your Band Won't Gig

Thanks for the feedback guys. Looks like my fears were correct. We've had one "what do you guys want to do" discussion, but I think two of the guys in the band are a little in fear of the third, and...

When Your Band Won't Gig

I'm in a very frustrating position, so I'd like to vent a bit, and if there's any advice to be given, please feel free :-P

I've been playing drums for about ten years now - I started late in life....

Re: Good exercises for two-handed hi-hat beats?

Hi, thanks, is the Benny Greb method described in full somewhere?

Re: Good exercises for two-handed hi-hat beats?

Sorry for going dark after asking the question! This is basically what I'm asking. The problem for me is the right hand going from hat to snare, crash, etc, without disturbing the rhythm. At high...

Good exercises for two-handed hi-hat beats?

I occasionally have to play a fast two-handed hi-hat beat and I just don't feel like I do it very well. Obviously I could just practice the patterns I actually have to play, but I'd like to address...

Re: Unpopular Drumming Opinion Thread

That's interesting, b/c I have the exact opposite response: I find modern jazz incredibly boring. It's seriously as if nothing has changed in jazz in decades.

(One exception I want to note: I went...

Re: Unpopular Drumming Opinion Thread

Yeah Paul F. Tompkins has a great bit on this:

I think it's the same with lots of music, like Rush and Animals As Leaders and Dream Theater. There are...

Re: Unpopular Drumming Opinion Thread

Hmm.

It's unpopular opinion, not uninformed opinion. This is "A Love Supreme" on YouTube:

Now certainly one can argue that this album has lots of...

Re: Unpopular Drumming Opinion Thread

Here's one: I think Coltrane is a very overrated jazz musician, and so is Elvin Jones.

I just tried listening to "A Love Supreme" again, and it's still just a group of guys all playing as fast and...

Re: Idris Muhammad

Reviving an old thread: I have heard Idris' name before, but he was recently mentioned in a video lesson by Stanton Moore so I'm thinking about him again. But I don't know any of his work.

What...

Re: 20x14 Bass drum for hardcore playing - my point!

I play a 20x14, and one of the best gigs I ever played the sound engineer made it seem like a 30x20. Deep, booming bass.

Only negative is the place closed, so I've never had my drum sound like...

Re: Do you feel sorry for today's kids?

A lot of people echo this sentiment, so I'll just address the original.

Put simply, I don't think what you're saying is true.

I frequently hear the argument "Oh, if you listen to the...

Re: Do you feel sorry for today's kids?

Oh, dear. It's like you only have one setting.

Most of the Western world is actually in population decline (look at Japan/Europe birth rates).

And 'environmental issues'? The environment has...

Re: Led Zep Vs Spirit issue

No, not at all. All those forms of prostitution exist today and in a far greater scale, so it seems to me that 'liberalizing' public behavior was a net negative.

I don't see any reason to...

Do you feel sorry for today's kids?

Well, that could be a general question, but I mean specifically about music.

I know it's standard for every generation to complain about the music of later generations, but really it's always...

Re: Cajon fatigue?

I got a cajon because my guitar player told me he wanted to do some acoustic gigs. As is usual with guitar players, this never came to pass.

I took a few lessons to get started and I was amazed...

Re: counting while playing

The advice I was given (unsolicited and a bit rude) a few months ago was that counting is critical. I kind of agree. So while I won't count while playing live, I always count while practicing.
