Re: Difference in Pearl snares . . .

I just watched a demo today from DCP (drum center portsmouth in NH) where Shane, the owner, said the new brass sensitone premium snare (with patina finish) is his #1 go-to brass snare--a rather bold...

Re: Pearl Wood Fiberglass Demos?

Here is the first video demo of the Wood Fiberglass kit that I am aware of:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDC2BZHUOGY&spfreload=10

Scroll to 4 min. mark to hear the drums--DCP spends a bit...

Pearl Wood Fiberglass Demos?

Are there any demos of the new Pearl Wood Fiberglass drum sets? I've checked periodically, but no luck. It took Pearl and shops forever to get demos of the Crystal Beats online, so I'm guessing the...

Re: Mapex Wraith Snare

Thanks for the feedback, all. I've heard the Nomad online as well--Calhoun's snare--and that one sounds too wild, ringy to my ears. Maybe it's just the multi-vents on the Wraith that dry it up...

Re: Peter Erskine moves to Tama...

Someone at DW Drums not doing their work on the Website: while trying to locate information on Hungarian drummer Ferenc Nemeth, I noticed that Peter Erskine and his kit setup is still listed on DW's...

Mapex Wraith Snare

This might be a silly question, but I'll ask anyway. Here's a video demo of the Mapex Wraith snare (1.2 mm brass, 9 vent holes, branded as "bone dry, articulate, loud"):
...

Re: Russ Miller here.....

Dear Russ: Thanks for the joining the forum and for taking time to response to questions.

I just have a question about the Soniclear mounts. Are you referring to the new clamp device Mapex...

Re: Video Demo: Mapex Versatus Snare

Shane of Drums Center P loves the snare; here is his demo:

Re: Sonor vs. DW

The Sonor Ascents are okay, but not worth $1800+ for those drums--overpriced for what they are (Chinese-made, assembly line kit). I'd rather buy an 18/14/12 set of Mapex Saturn V (cost: $1200) than...

Re: Video Demo: Mapex Versatus Snare

That is not a Saturn snare; it looks pretty clearly like Russ's prototype: it is shallow in depth and has off-set lugs. Saturn snares do not have off-set lugs and the shallowest depth is 5.5", and...

Re: Jazz Drums

Bop kit in 18/14/12 for $2200?

1. Gretsch Broadkaster
2. Gretsch Brooklyn (you might even be able to squeeze into a USA Custom for just a tad more change)
3. Premier Modern Classic
4. George...

Re: Demos of the New Ludwig Copper Phonic?

Thanks for the feedback, Bermuda. I am surprised at this poor marketing--and it is not just Ludwig. It took Pearl forever to get a good video demo of the Crystal Beats out (Memphis Drum finally...

Re: Gretsch New Classic

I wouldn't spend $1600 on a New Classic bop kit. You can get a Gretsch Brooklyn bop (18/14/12) kit for just about $1700 or less right now, and those kits are much nicer than the NCs and are made in...

Demos of the New Ludwig Copper Phonic?

Does anyone know of any sound or video demos of the new Ludwig Copper Phonic snares? I haven't seen any yet, but updates come to the Internet at all hours. I'm curious to hear this snare since I've...

Re: Video Demo: Mapex Versatus Snare

Don't tell Russ Miller that! Ha!

Yes, I was bothered by what I felt was excessive ring--it didn't sound super well controlled. I liked some of the sensitivity, but even that feature was...

Re: Video Demo: Mapex Versatus Snare

Yes, I had mixed feelings about it too. I'm waiting to hear the Copper Phonics, and the Premier Modern Classics (kit and snares) sound pretty nice. Steve Maxwell has a video demo on this kit.

Video Demo: Mapex Versatus Snare

I finally found a shop that's posted a video demo of the Mapex Versatus snare (maple/mahogany):

I have a soft spot of 4x14 snares (this one is 4 5/8...

Re: New Pearl masters MCX = Horrible!

You might consider sending your drums to Bill Detamore at Pork Pie Percussion. He can recut the bearing edges and try to breathe new life into the standard boxy Pearl sound. Bill's recut edges for a...

Re: George Way Drum Co. ?

From what I've been told by a well-respected jazz drum dealer, the George Way drum kits are made in Asia (I think Taiwan), not in Canada. Hence the obvious price difference, for one, between George...

Re: Jazz and Matched Grip

Billy Cobham and Simon Phillips both use matched grip, open hand style. Terri Lyne Carrington uses both, but seems to lead more these days with matched grip. Chad Wackerman also uses matched (more...

Re: Pork Pie Snares?

Just ask Bill to build you a Pork Pie snare with solid brass tube lugs. No splay there, guaranteed. I have a custom-made PP maple 7x14 snare, and I requested brass tube lugs.

Bill is well known...

Re: New Bop Kit, Help Decide

Go to Boston Drum's website and check out the Canopus Yaiba bop kits--very good. Canopus really emphasize building drums for jazz, and the Yaiba kits are more affordable. That said, you could...

Re: Jazz Setup & Tom Sizes: 10/12 vs. 12/13

I like that the band couldn't dig your experiment: sounds typical of how we drummers get treated--ha! It reminds me of a story one of my old drum teachers told me about Garibaldi reversing the...

Re: Jazz Setup & Tom Sizes: 10/12 vs. 12/13

Yeah, using the 10" tom tuned for a jazz setting makes me feel like the 12" tom is asking, "Hey, what am I supposed to do?" I think to make the 10/12 work I wind up tuning the 12" tom slightly lower...
