Re: For those who play at church or not.

Forgive me if I am incorrect, but you sound like you were raised as a Roman Catholic (as I was, with 12 years Catholic schooling). I am not religious currently yet a lifetime of Catholic teaching...

Re: No rudiments taught in marching band?

I have to say, I wish I had been around this as a kid.

Frankly, as a young metal-head, I doubt if I ever viewed the marching bands as anything but the ultimate in cheesy dorkness. It had to have...

Re: The Marcus Williams Fill

Yes, essentially there are two ways to approach it:

1. As a septuplet, This would mean playing seven notes per beat (for starters)

2. As a 7 note phrase superimposed over the existing...

Re: What will it take for me to be able to do this?

I will add just one more "P".

Pay attention to what your hands look and sound like.

Stay away from everyone's "opinions" on hand technique. Only a real pro with serious hands of his own should...

Re: Double Bass Drum Futility

You really need to check out George Kollias' double bass drum book. It reviews the different leg motions that occur at the different tempos.

What I usually see when people are stuck at a certain...

Re: Drums as an investment?

I have one! It's my main hard rock/metal gigging snare.

NOT for sale.

Re: Drums as an investment?

No, No, No. There aren't enough vintage drum enthusiasts and the demographic is not necessarily very wealthy. It's not like they are vintage Rolls Royces.

Reality shows like "Storage Wars" or...

Re: Writing with the weak hand?

Alright, since this doesn't seem to want to die...

I dare anyone to not practice on the pad for a month, but just do stuff like opening doors and writing with your left hand.

Take a video of...

Re: Writing with the weak hand?

I tried it, it doesn't do anything for your drumming technique. It won't hurt anything but it's not going to make your drumming better.

I have a little pet peeve about "working the weak hand"...

Re: 10,000 hours of practice

IDK about 10,000 hrs being a magical number but it does seem that those whom are considered masters tend to have earned it through diligent practice.

Of course mastery is possible. What is missing...

Very professionally done on both sides.

As opposed to:

Re: Focusing on finger control or wrist control?

As a beginner you should ONLY follow the advice of a trusted, real drumming professional. Technique discussions between less advanced players often cause more problems than solve anything.

Find a...

Re: I can't believe how much I sucke when it comes to soloing.

Furthering this line of thinking,in addition to the great drumset oriented work out there, it wouldn't hurt to listen to some of the great classical compositions and read along with the liner notes....

Re: Bands and tempo arguments

You don't need to buy a drum machine.

What you need is a programmable click app for your smartphone.

I use Metron. I programmed my band's entire last album on it and practiced to that. Fully...

Re: Is "pocket" what you play or how you play it?

I like this little metaphor.

I also want to paraphrase the late great Jeff Porcaro: Don't worry about terms like "pocket", "behind the beat", and "groove". Just make the music feel good and play...

Re: Meytal Cohen? She plays, right?

Exactly what I was thinking. She looks as if she has never broken a sweat behind the kit in her life.

About as much passion as dry white bread. All fluff.

Exactly the opposite of Evelyn...

Re: DW aquires Gretsch and Latin Percussion...

I love how he goes into a rage, runs out of pure rage and sinks into depression at the end. Perfect. By far the funniest drum-related thing I've ever seen. Every serious jazz guy must be thinking all...

Re: When have you truly 'mastered' a given BPM?

Tell your friend that a guy on the forum said one hour was for wusses. The truth is, if you can't play at 250 BPM for 8 hours you suck. ;)

Re: Meytal Cohen? She plays, right?

Well said.

The truth is that the less "strength" you rely on the better you sound.

Not that I think Ms. Cohen's drumming is particularly noteworthy, but that has nothing to do with her gender.

Re: Meytal Cohen? She plays, right?

Dame Evelyn Glennie is possibly the most inspired musician I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. Her passion is otherworldly, never mind the fact that she is a miracle who plays an instrument...

Re: BPM recall ability

I remember Joe Morello being able to call out the tempos from just hearing the metronome. This was a constant source of amazement to his students.

Not off of a click but off of one of the old...
