Re: Straying out of my comfort zone

Ha.. kind of proved my point.. even the sound guy knows that e-drums don't cut it in a live playing situation. Acoustics rule!
Glad it worked out for you!

Re: sixteenths on hats?

Yes.. I use that technique as well; and any other accenting patterns help to relieve the stress at hi tempos. Also I don't know why but it seems easier to play fast straight 16 ths in a half time...

Re: The Magnificent 7... a must have book for drummers

Ha.. Cool the youtube video shows Bill Stewart playing at Smokes. I went there the last time I was in NYC last year and saw a 'smokin' band. The drummer had his snare on such a steep angle he had to...

Re: sixteenths on hats?

Nice... I love Jeff Porcaro! He was a true master.
.. and it's true, it does sound groovier when you play it with one hand. But in those case where the tempo is too fast, and you're playing a 3 hour...

Re: sixteenths on hats?

It's funny.. straight 16ths or fast 8ths can be a breeze to play up to a point, but once you cross that speed threshold they can make your hand fall off! I use a couple of techniques when the speed...

Re: Pete Best and Beatles - I Am The Walrus

LoL! I originally started off my rant with 'Sorry to be a party pooper but..'

Re: Pete Best and Beatles - I Am The Walrus

Those videos are really in bad taste.. kind of what a schoolyard bully would think of doing. The person that posted it probably has no talent and can only make themselves think their important by...

Re: can anybody on earth transcribe this satanic groove?

Not sure why anyone would want to.. it really sounds like crud on a stick. He's playing offset patterns lifted from a shuffle with some double hits thrown in. But at the end of the day, it doesn't...

Re: Straying out of my comfort zone

Don\t do it! E-kits really suck big time live.. think elevator music with no presence other than in the sound booth. If all the other drummers are playing acoustic kits you will be very disappointed....

Re: Tempo comfort zones

Makes sense.. if you count it as double that's around 150bpm which is the tempo for Brown Eyed Girl.. a chestnut I know, but a good marker for dance tempos.

Re: Tempo comfort zones

I think everyone has a natural meter they fall into.. probably creatures of habit from practicing the same things over and over at the same speed, or just from playing standard dance tempos - some...

Re: "Play something." What do you play?

First I say 'You have to pay me first'.. badump-ching..
but usually I would play what the sound guy usually asks for after soundchecking the kit pieces eg. 'Now the whole kit'
- so I play a quick...

Re: Bo rants!

Yup good call.. If the 'meltdown' was extreme anger, yelling and swearing; I wouldn't put up with it either..esp. Over such a minor issue. What happens if there's a big issue? Usually when a band has...

Re: What is your opinion of this Billy Cobham review?

I've seen BC play live and his volume was fine.. If the reviewer thought the sound was not balanced he should of at least walked around the auditorium to see if he either just had a bad seat or if...

Re: Ringo's Drumming: Harder Than It Looks

That's amazing! I don't know how you found those clips.. you can see the evolution in the rythmn as he tries different feels after each take. and finally settles on it. Those guys would knock off 3...

Re: Has any one tried the song "Hollywood Nights" by Bob Segar?

One of my bands played that tune and I was forced to learn it.. a really awful drum part IMHO.. just repetitive mush with no dynamics.. I think you could probably find the pattern in Ted Reed's...

Re: played (maybe joined) in blues band

I think you mean the 'Flat tire shuffle'
Also nothing wrong with Further on up the Road.. Levon Helm plays a mean shuffle on that one.. while singing the lead vocal as well!

Re: Ringo's Drumming: Harder Than It Looks

Quote: "...I think John or Paul said "Can you play that Ray Charles bit?", and Ringo said "Yes, I know that well""

As I said before, one of the reasons they picked Ringo over Pete Best was he had...

Re: Worst song ever

That's ridiculous.. you can't change anyone's taste in music, and no one really cares what other people like. .. it's when there are factually incorrect opinions stated that it get's murky.. like...

Re: played (maybe joined) in blues band

If you can shuffle well enough that people jump onto the dance floor without ever hearing the tune, then you've got it! My favorite shuffles are the 'killer shuffle' and the 'stumble shuffle'.. or...

Re: Worst song ever

Funny thread.. But.. c'mon; no one mentioned :

Muskrat Love (by Captain and Tennile)?
- apart from the silly song concept, the solo is a keyboard synthesizing the sound of muskrats going at it!...

Re: Ringo's Drumming: Harder Than It Looks

Abe is fantastic.. he plays Ringo to a tee and just kills it! Really solid and dynamic player. Saw them last spring; great show, great band!

Yes.. the inspiration for IFF was the Ray Charles tune..(the beat in particular) which was big hit at the time when they...

Re: Ringo's Drumming: Harder Than It Looks

Heresay! You're a heretic.. it's funny, the only people I've ever met, that don't like the Beatles, are those that lived close to where they came from. A couple of my friends who grew up in...
