Re: Hand technique concepts - Jojo Mayer vs. Bill Bachman?

It doesn't matter, whichever you'll actually practice will work.
Another thumbs up for Igoe and JoJo. I'm not familiar with Bill, but for twenty scoots a month to practice rudiments to play...

Re: For the gigging drummers, what is your last song?

The SNL closing them. It gives us a chance to intro the band, thank folks, congratulate brides and grooms, etc. And it serves as a nice cue to the audience that we're done, so they can stop yelling...

Re: YouTube's influence, how realistic?

I find the Youtube cover, espec. the dirty bedroom-crappy camera variety, to be as annoying as the "little kid covers hard song" genre of Youtube videos.

For product testing, I listen to them,...

Re: The Minimal Setup

I like having a lot of voices around the kit, but also enjoy playing a gig with a 2 pc. Whatever makes you happy, do that.

Re: Have you ever answered a Craigslist add to tell them their ad sucks?

I haven't picked on gear sellers, but I've replied a few times to play-for-free opportunities. Someone posted about playing at their bar for the great exposure, so I mimicked the title and posted...

Re: Ready to Jam and everyone else is still tuning.

I had a classic a coupla weeks ago. Three guys coming over to think about putting a project together and jam a bit. The guitarist bums a ride because his crappy old car died, he bummed a smoke as...

Re: Drum Shields??

I meant the Zildjian logo and non-drummers in general. My point is that the shield seems to be very present in that genre, and I'm inclined to think by the results some of these guys are reporting...

Re: "Awesome Video"

That was a great performance and arrangement. In terms of the drum part, I think this is a case where changing the drum part is tantamount to changing the lyrics. They're just so signature to the...

Re: Drum Shields??

I have to say, I think it's just a church band trend. Like you don't have a real worship band thing going on unless you have one. Probably propagated by church band leaders. Like the band leaders...

Re: Playing songs the same way every time? and same set-up?

This is very situation-dependent. Some thoughtful change-up is good for the mind if the gig allows it. On the fly, sure again if it's not inappropriate. Since they're your songs, it sounds like...

Re: Drum Shields??

I think they are useful for an orchestral setting, let's say an orchestra that has a pop singer or jazz singer as guest artist, and there are a bunch of string players sitting in front of the set. ...

Re: Questions about starting up

First advice is get a teacher! Seriously.

Second, take a song, learn the fills in it, slow them down to get the complicated stuff right. Speed takes time and repetition at lower speeds.

Re: Set list idea: how to craft a list that all band members are happy with.

I agree completely on medleys, they work like mad. The party band does two or three per set, and people leave the floor exhausted. We too do an EWF medley, and man people love that music, on stage...

Re: Set list idea: how to craft a list that all band members are happy with.

OK guys and gals, let me re-ask the question. What do you think of this system for settling on the 40-song set list of a cover band, drawing from the 100 or so suggestions of proper cover band songs...

Re: Set list idea: how to craft a list that all band members are happy with.

The point is, there are a hundred different ways to skin that cat. I've played the standard set a million times, and I know there is a lot more to draw from.

I should have said this earlier to...

Re: Set list idea: how to craft a list that all band members are happy with.

I've been playing in the same party band for 15 years, and I get the program. The mistake that I think people make is thinking that the list has to contain those 15 everybody plays. There is so, so...

Set list idea: how to craft a list that all band members are happy with.

I have an idea for cover bands. When the band sits down to put together their big ol' song list, I was thinking that a rating system may work well. So much of a player's happiness rests on the...

Putting the band together - thoughts?

What do you consider the most important things when it comes to putting a band together and auditioning folks? A singer and I have a similar vision of a band that rehearses weekly, and plays a music...

Re: Drinking and Drumming

One drink before first set, maybe one before the second. Same with public speaking - I do much better with exactly one drink in me.

Re: Tommy Igoe's Great Hands material

Isn't it on the dvd in a pdf somewhere? There's a 52 pg practice guide in there, it must have the poster/map among that stuff.

Re: What professional drummer's setup do you admire most?

This is the one I look to most when looking for ideas before a change of arrangement. The guy's got efficiency wired.

Re: Loose Snare Stand?

I only tighten the stand for transport, and loosen it enough to lift it right off for playing. It doesn't go anywhere, I don't play upside-down. The wires touching the stand is pretty odd though.

Re: Drummer Sweat

Had the problem. This is the fix, even playing party music in tux parts:

Re: Fixing my wobbly time.

Another good reason to use a click at rehearsals is so that you can get used to what it feels like when your band mates go off a bit. It can be hard to tell who's at fault sometimes, and sometimes...
