Re: Struggling with Renowns

I should clarify my previous comment. When I said even tension all around, I should have said even pitch all around, at every tension rod. Whether or not that entails even tension is another matter,...

Re: Struggling with Renowns

You do know those chevrons can be removed, right? One of my Renown kits is a black 57 without the chevrons, and with square USA badges added. The toms looked a little plain without any sort of badge...

Re: Struggling with Renowns

Hmmm I've never struggled tuning my Renowns, and I've never used a TuneBot. I've also never done any "trick" tuning with a detuned lug or anything like that. I always tune by ear to even tension all...

Re: Too Much 2 & 4

I'm a firm believer of changing things up from just a simple 2 & 4 beat wherever it makes sense to do so, even if it's just adding some color to the hi hat groove or accenting hits with the rest of...

Re: Next Stage Custom?

I never suggested 10 lugs per side for a 14" floor tom. It should be 8 per side, which is what 99.9% of floor toms use. Currently SCs use 6 per side on their 14s. And frankly, when combined with thin...

Re: Next Stage Custom?

That brings up the only thing I'd absolutely change about the Stage Customs: make sure ALL drums have the correct number of lugs. Currently, 14" floor toms and 18" bass drums have only 6 lugs per...

Re: Next Stage Custom?

Wow, I can't believe all the back and forth about whether or not to upload someone else's photo. So to put an end to it, here you go. Happy?

Now I'll be damned for all eternity.

Re: Struggling with Renowns

Ah, got it. Thanks for the clarification, and the compliment. I suppose now that you'll be tuning your toms like mine, that's the ultimate compliment! Good luck, I hope they end up sounding great...

Re: Struggling with Renowns

Thank you, but I'm not sure what you're referring to by "open" note. Is that what I have labeled as a "full tom hit"?

Regardless, there are obviously a range of notes present in any drum, so I...

Re: Struggling with Renowns

Okay, I FINALLY got this video to upload. Check it out here (https://youtu.be/Ge70HvjPLCM). It should be pretty self-explanatory, but it's very important to get the tuning perfectly even all the way...

Re: Next Stage Custom?

You want pictures? Here you go. I had a thread earlier about refinishing an 18" bass drum to match my piano black Renowns, and I ended up lacquering the hoops black (they were originally black on the...

Re: Struggling with Renowns

Thanks! I actually just switched back to coated Ambassadors after playing coated Emperors on top for the past 10 or so years. I was looking for less mass on the top head to open up the sound a bit,...

Re: Struggling with Renowns

So back to the original issue. I have two Renown kits, and I've been able to get them sounding great at nearly every kind of tuning. Right now I have them tuned low/medium-low, with coated over clear...

Re: Perhaps it's time to get sensible?

Bo, I have my Gretsch kit with 16x20" bass drum set up in my studio in West LA. If you want to come check it out, you're more than welcome, just PM me. I have it tuned low and wide open, with a clear...

Re: Estimating Drum Sizes from a Photo

Here are my guesses, from left to right.

Black Diamond Pearl: 8x12*, 9x13, 16x16, 14x22

Piano Black: 8x12, 16x16, 14x20

Silver Sparkle: 8x12*, 14x14, 14x20

Sky Blue Pearl: 8x12*, 16x16,...

Re: Perhaps it's time to get sensible?

I'm not especially tall myself (5'8"), but even at an 8" advantage, my gigging kit with a 22" bass drum and 8x10 & 9x12 toms sits just a little high for me. I vastly prefer how I'm able to setup my...

Re: Next Stage Custom?

Die cast hoops on an entry level kit? That alone would nearly double the price, so it will never happen. I'd settle for 2.3mm flanged hoops instead. More finish options would be good, especially some...

Re: Drum Gear for an 8/9 year old

The good thing about L80 cymbals is that they're quiet, reasonably priced, and feel like real cymbals. To me, they have the same feel as lower end cymbals, but real nonetheless. I don't think that...

Re: Drum Gear for an 8/9 year old

I have a kit that I keep setup in my apartment (a Yamaha Stage Custom Bop). I installed SilentStroke heads and bought L80 cymbals, and it works great overall. But I ended up swapping the SilentStroke...

Re: What makes an adorable drummer?

Now that I've gone back and looked at the OP of the "What makes a great drummer" thread, I get it.

So... what makes an incandescent drummer?

Re: What makes an adorable drummer?

Either the OP meant to say "admirable" drummer, or this is the most idiotic thread I've ever seen on DW.

Re: Worst Badge in the Business

That would have to be a pretty hideous badge to keep me from buying a kit I otherwise loved.

Like at least as bad as this.

Re: Worst Badge in the Business

Has anyone here indicated that they wouldn't buy a great-sounding kit because they didn't like the badges? Not that I could see. And I don't think that's the point of this thread. It's not "I passed...
