Re: Newest tools

Bo,

Do you like the Pearl tom mounts? One thing I think Tama Starclassics have going for them are the tom mounts--they don't interfere with the lugs or shell, and I frequently notice that they...

Re: Newest tools

Bo,

Very nice kit! What happened to your Luddies and the Tama SC B/B kit you had in lacquer oyster? Did you sell those to get the Pearl?

I recently looked into Pearl Reference Pure in...

Re: What Tom Size Is Most Versatile?

I don't have this kit. I have a Tama Silverstar with a rare 14x20 bass drum and would some sturdier toms with the nicer Starclassic mount, but the B/B drums only one in 7x12 or 9x12.

Re: What Tom Size Is Most Versatile?

Andy: I was hoping you might weigh in here, given your recent post about the Guru tom experiments. To answer your question, the shell and hardware are Tama Starclassic Bubinga Birch, chrome Tama SC...

What Tom Size Is Most Versatile?

I should immediately qualify this question by noting that I'm looking to add on some toms to a Tama kit I have, but the only options are either 6.5x10 and 7x12 or 8x10 and 9x12.

Which set of toms...

Re: Sakae drums

Sakae's drums are really no different than pricing for Pearl Reference Pure, Yamaha Absolutes, Gretsch USA Custom, and the like. I got a quote for the maple series Almighty kit in 18/14/12 for...

Re: Yamaha Live Custom (Oak) review

I used to play an Oak Custom kit, and I used Aquarian DeJohnette single-ply coated heads. Those drums were super open, resonant, and projecting. Single-ply or "jazz" heads will really allow the Oaks...

Is it unethical to buy drums made in China?

The reason I ask this question may be obvious. In light of recent figures documenting the insane pollution levels in China, which I believe are due to the massive amounts of out-sourced manufacturing...

Re: Spent a few hours in Drum Shop (Washington, UK) today

I got a quote of $2400, I think, directly from a Sakae USA rep for a 18/14/12 bebop set up of Almighty Maples. He said a Sakae dealer should be able to shave a bit more off.

Ignore the price...

Re: Mapex Armory series

For this talk by Mapex, they still haven't updated their websites with the new drum kit info--at least not as of last week, and worse no video/sound files to demonstrate the Armory kits.

Talk...

Sakae Brings Back the "Recording Custom"

Sakae introduced the Almighty Birch (http://www.sakaedrums.com/en/products/almighty_birch.php) series drum kit at NAMM, which was posted via their website belatedly. It is made of Japanese...

Re: Best Buys from NAMM 2014?

The Ascents are made in China. As far as I know, the only kits made in Germany are SQ2, Pro-lites, those new special edition snares, the re-issue Phonic snares, etc. If you want good quality Sonor,...

Re: Best Buys from NAMM 2014?

Bermuda: Regarding Sakae, do you mean the new lineup of snares? I didn't notice any expansion to the drum series--same old Celestial, Almighty, etc., series. Sakae has peaked my interest--quite a few...

Best Buys from NAMM 2014?

After reviewing the seemingly slim pickings from NAMM this year, I'll venture an opinion that the revised Yamaha Stage Custom (birch) kits and the Crush Eminent Birch or Acrylic kits are the best...

Not so, according to Rupps Drums in the USA. They are currently listing the "cheapest" new Absolute Hybrid Maple kits, in 4 pc configurations, starting at +$2999. The other configurations are well...

Bo: Will Kennedy actually plays the Reference Pure kits. He often plays the MCX kits and maybe even the SSC kits, depending on what the specific venue has on hand, but the Pearl reps over at the...

Re: Yamaha Drums

I agree, Andy. I'm amazed too at how many times I listen to good quality drums sound mediocre at best. And then I can go to a jazz jam and hear an awesome bebop-tuned kit and think it is an Absolute...

Re: Sonor SQ2 and Dale's Drumshop

Good story. Sonor seems best known for their beech kits. Most Sonor players I know covet the old Phonic series, which were German beech. Cue Tom Petty now..."The waiting..."

It took Ludwig *ages* to finally add more, interesting lacquer finishes to the maple line, so anything...

Sonor Force 3007/Select Force Kits

Sounds freakin' amazing, Larry. Sounds so crisp and focused and woody at those high, high tunings. Just awesome.
