Re: drummer depressed and discouraged

Everyone goes through this, like said. I get this feeling a lot, but for me it only lasts for like a week, and then I get a boost of confidence and imagination. When you feel like you just can't play...

Re: Martin Lopez

So would I... can't wait to hear what he's up to.

I'm very sad he couldn't stay in the band... he's so much more dynamic than Axe in many ways. But we'll see once the new album is out.

Re: What is the most Versatile Snare you have ever owned?

Most versatile I've owned is the Omar Hakim signature... it sounded very nice tuned low, with a lot of warmth, and it could be tuned to a tight pop. It was 13" so it's not really that versatile, but...

Re: Which do you prefer, metal snares or wooden snares?

I really don't like metal snares... they're nice to play for a while, but I get tired of the sound. I can't do without the warmth of a wood snare. Mahogany snares are my favorite.

Re: Anyone Not Care About Double Bass?

I agree that double bass is a problem... I see so many youngsters that use it because they think it's the coolest thing in the world. It's just how it is. Their musical and rhythmical tastes will...

Re: Tom sizes

A 14" rack tom? I dislike even 12" rack toms, so I don't really have a say...
I'd go with getting a 10" and a 14".

You say you want something versatile, for any genre... a 10" tom would certainly...

Re: Double pedal or two bass drums

If you don't use double bass a LOT, I suggest double pedal. Two bass drums is expensive and a hassle to transport.

Re: How can I realise the importance/application of rudiments and why they help

I was earlier in also verys sceptical to rudiments and even the idea of using them around the kit. I thought it was a way too common way to play, but that was until I discovered how the grooves I...

Re: Pearl MCX Tom choices

Your description of the 22x18 kick sound phenomenal. It's true that a kick SHOULD kick you in the gut, and you should feel it in the chest as well.

It's likely I'll order a bass with a mount,...

Re: Pearl MCX Tom choices

Thanks so much for the replies! Good to hear that 8 10 14 16 works, cause I really want those rumbling floor toms. I was just a little concerned about the price which will be at about 2000... but I'm...

Re: Pearl MCX Tom choices

Yeah, that's a choice I was considering, but I probably should've mentioned I don't want a 12" rack tom, just small 8" and 10".

Pearl MCX Tom choices

I'm currently considering getting an MCX kit in the not-so-distant future... just a couple of things I'm wondering though.

I'm looking at MassMusic.net, and I don't really dig the shell...

Re: Custom Snare

If you like bright, 13" is for you... I tend to crank my 14, so I know I need a 13" snare. Had one but it got stolen and I'm stuck with a cheap metal 14".

Re: Thumb up / Thumb on side

That's true, they all have their uses. You just have to make sure you don't slip back to what you're used to.

Re: Post your Greatest Weakness

My greatest weakness is not having enough energy to practice on the set every day. I really need to get out of that ditch because music is very important to me.

Re: Thumb up / Thumb on side

There are 3 "main" grips... I believe they're called German, American and French grips.

The German is when your palms are parallel to the drumhead (thumbs on the side). This doesn't leave much...

Re: Gavin Harrison here!

Hi Gavin,

it's great to see you on the boards! You're a huge inspiration to many, myself included. I've watched your two DVDs and learned a lot from them - especially the excersize in keeping time...

Re: Place for set?

I advise against setting kits up in sheds, garages and the like. Temperature needs to be stabile and humidity will ruin your kit in the long run. If it's expensive, move it inside!

Re: 10 great progressive drummers

I believe I am the first to mention:

Martin Lopez, Opeth - Still Life, Blackwater Park, Deliverance, Damnation, Ghost Reveries and My Arms Your Hearse? Unsure about the last.
Johan Langell,...

Re: Warming up for the drumset with a guitar..

I think I know what you mean.... I started playing the guitar on a daily basis a few weeks back and I do feel a certain change. Maybe I should try "warming up" as you say.

Re: Playing drums with bad emotions.........

I think mood and emotion is everything when it comes to your performance on the kit. Some people are just angry (I'm talking metal here) and that reflects their playing.

I feel a huge difference...

Re: At what age did you start playing?

I started when I was 17... now I'm 20.

I don't think you have to start early, but it is an advantage, definately. I tend to be more exited about drummers who haven't been drumming since they were...

Re: What profesional drummer's setup do u admire most?

It's not a very unique setup, but I like the way Martin Lopez set up his drums around the Lamentations tour... pretty simple, and I like the 2up 2down setup and cymbal positions. Double bass is...

Re: More experience as a drummer, less muffling of the kit..what does that tell us?

I know that I've developed a better taste in sound over the few years I've been drumming.
At first, I didn't know what I wanted from a drum, but I think I tried to get very little resonance from...
