Re: Double pedal - on it's way out.

This is one of the nice things about an e-kit. On mine I use two wildly different kick sounds. I don't know why more people don't do it. As you say, it opens up some interesting possibilities.

Re: College- What do i do!! :(

Not if he's a full time student who's doing what he's supposed to. The rule of thumb is at least 2 hours of outside work per credit hour. Going to school full time is literally a full time job. He...

Re: Double pedal - on it's way out.

Giving some of the wacky things I've been reading lately, it is good to hear about someone with something positive happening. I hope things only improve for you.

Re: College- What do i do!! :(

As others have said, see if you can do off campus housing to cut costs. 13k per year is not a good setup, winding up 50k in debt upon graduating. Granted, you can take an awful lot of private lessons...

Re: What's your latest purchase?

In that case you might want to look at their Sterling. I played a Ray 5 and thought I would break my neck. Instead I bought a Sterling 5. Lighter, slightly smaller body, very similar sound, great...

Re: What's your latest purchase?

Ala Percy Jones or John Giblin, I take it? I have a couple of Music Man basses but they were purchased a while back and don't count for this thread.

My most recent purchase was new rear rotors for...

Re: Post your Greatest Weakness

My biggest weakness is that I prefer to do things I'm good at over things I'm not so good at. Consequently, the fact that I am a better drummer than bass player works against me when it comes time to...

Re: Very excited!

You have to read the comments under the video link from the original post. I like this one particularly:

"The bass player seems like the weakest link here. He keeps the beat but he doesn't really...

Re: Location, Location, Location

Room resonance modes can have a huge impact on what you hear in the lower frequency register. I do a demonstration for my Science of Sound students on this. I set up a subwoofer in the lab which is...

Re: Don't do that!

Yeah, don't put anything on my drums or my amplifiers or my loudspeakers. I'm kind of touchy like that. These things make noise and items are known to vibrate off of them and onto the floor creating...

Re: Too Old To Seriously Take Up Drumming?

The best response to this idea that I ever heard went something along the lines of:

Q: Am I too old to do X? In 10 years I'll be 65!

A: And how old will you be in 10 years if you don't do X?

Re: Did Bill Bruford stop practicing for a while?

I've got some King Crimson Collector's Club releases and when listening to one of them for the first time I did a double-take because I was hearing a live tune that I had heard on one of the later...

Re: Did Bill Bruford stop practicing for a while

Yes, you definitely do need to pick up the autobio. Besides being a top drummer he's also a talented writer (no co-write credits on this one) and soon-to-be PhD.

Don't forget that in the post-Yes...

Re: Unpopular Drumming Opinion Thread

PLEASE, MORE OF THIS!!!

I once saw a TV show with a bunch of "stars" doing some kind of benefit, each taking a turn for their bit in the spotlight. Mr. Slash played (and I use the term loosely) a...

Re: Unpopular Drumming Opinion Thread

Granted, Zappa was dead for most of it so that didn't help the situation.

Re: Sorry - here's another look at my current tools

Interesting kit, Bo. It kinda looks like the offspring of a traditional kit mated with a Bill Bruford Earthworks V2 kit. I recall BB had his HH dead center.

How's the remote hat working for you?

Re: Argument with Guitarist over time signature

Geez, I'd hate to hear the argument if someone was playing a 5/4 repeating pattern under someone else's interlocking 3/4 pattern.

The bottom line is whether or not all involved parties agree on...

Re: Would you notice quantized drumming in a video?

Technically, all quantized means is that events cannot happen at any point in a continuously variable fashion but that they must occur at multiples of an underlying quantum. For example, you could...

Re: Sound person as part of the band

This brings up some bad (and some good) memories. In the 1980s I ran a sound company with a friend. We had a very nice PA, I had designed the loudspeaker system, we had it down to a science. We were...

Re: What are your stories of when people found out you are drummer?

Agreed, and I think that's generally true across the board, too. Quick example, for many years I was a competitive distance runner. I won local races and placed well at major competitions. When...

Re: Unpopular Drumming Opinion Thread

The cat. The cat is on methadone. See? It makes for an entirely different audio scenario!

Trying to drown a regular cat would be a screaming, fighty nightmare but if the cat is dosed, bingo, you...

Re: What are your stories of when people found out you are drummer?

You know I cannot really think of any sort of consistent or funny reply, but then it is not something I tend to talk about. Funny thing though, just yesterday I was talking to a fellow professor...

Re: Unpopular Drumming Opinion Thread

Come to my home studio and you'll fit right in.

My unpopular opinions:

- The only finish on a shell that looks decent is real wood, preferably with minimal dye/stain. If I want something...
