Re: Very excited!

I totally agree, anything that Simon plays just sounds right. I couldn't imagine that any other drummer would fit better in the Hiromi trio. Have you seen the concert with Steve Smith playing with...

Re: Very excited!

I NEED to see that trio live, both Voice and Move have been playing frequently in the headphones since I came across Hiromis music.

You're gonna have a good time, enjoy. :)

Re: Help with snare drum tuning

You're the one who is supposed to like the sound of the drum, not other people. :) But since you asked, yeah, I think it sounds better now.

Regarding snare wire tension, loosen them up quite a...

Re: Are 13" toms obsolete?

That seems nice, I'd prefer 10"+13" rack toms over 12"+13", and maybe even over 10"+12", at least for playing at home. I tune the floor toms quite at home because it sounds better from the driver...

Re: Help with snare drum tuning

What sort of reso head is that? It almost sounds to me like it is not a designated snare reso head.

Re: Are 13" toms obsolete?

An unmiced 10" tom probably won't work very well in a live setting, the tone doesn't carry. At home however, I'm currently playing 1 up 2 down with a 10" rack tom with 14" and 16" floor toms, the 10"...

Re: Unpopular Drumming Opinion Thread

Sounds like quite the hassle! I'm SO glad that I don't dislike the sound of nylon tips, because frankly, wood tips have pathetic durability.

*Content user of nylon tipped sticks* :)

Re: It is your band, who do you pick for lead singer?

Definitely makes it onto my list!

Also:

Ian Kenny (Karnivool)
Adrian Belew (King Crimson among others)
1990s Maynard James Keenan (Tool)

Re: Freehand Technique by Johnny Rabb

Hi Johnny! I've found out about you just recently, and I thought to myself, "How have I been able to miss this guy for so long!?" Truly phenomenal playing.

My first encounter with the free hand...

Re: What are your favourite recorded drumsounds?

Toms and snare are good as perfect, but the bassdrum lacks the natural character that the toms have, so it sounds a little bit out of place I think. But damnit! That kit sounds good.

Re: How did I miss this?

This would be the complete version of the song, quite hilarious.

Re: Two-handed 16th rhythms on the hats.....

I think that double handed hi-hat work for several bars is waaaaay over used, at least in 4/4. Should any members of my band ever ask me to play that in our songs, this would be my reaction:

Re: Is one genre of music really harder to play than another?

Pop vs prog or jazz? The answer is obvious.

Re: Unpopular Drumming Opinion Thread

- I really don't like 90% of the Sabian AAX and Zildjian A lines, I think they're boring, sterile, and they sound mass produced to me. Also, brilliant finish on a cymbal takes away that impression of...

Re: Hard to find exactly what I want

As far as I know, you use 10mil single ply heads, correct? I suggest trying a 14mil single ply instead, it should give your drum a little more beef.

Re: Tuning toms

Which drum sizes do you have? And what pitches? You're most likely compromising the drums' sweetspots by tuning 3 semi tones apart. To me, 10" toms have optimal feel and sound tuned between D and E,...

Re: Snare size and ergonomics

I've been thinking about this as well, a smaller snare would have advantages. It would allow moving the hi-hat closer to the center of the kit, and it would also allow for some more space between the...

Re: How to tune drums?

I think his method is complete bogus. And it's quite evident when he hits the poor drum, it isn't tuned. And that guy is weird, when I wrote a comment on his video criticizing his method, in a quite...

Eye-level would feel insanely high for me, my two crashes sit about 2 inches below my shoulders.

Re: Odd-time songs that sound natural

Totally agreeing with you on Karnivool, especially "Goliath" comes to mind, I haven't bothered counting out that song, but it's a bunch of 6/8 and 7/8 bars that are mixed together so fluently. And...

Re: Odd-time songs that sound natural

Do not look down has a 17/16 bass/guitar groove though, over the 4/4. But it sounds really good.

The pot is mostly in 4/4 though, except for a few parts in 6/8. :) But Schism is really a perfect...

Re: Blushda - lR flam or rL flam in the beginning?

I can only play a decent blushda starting with a lR, starting with the left has always been my natural way of playing a flam. I find this to be a bit disadvantageous, because a flam played between a...

Re: Jack, killing it @ 70

I wonder if he's playing his 3 point ride here, the ride sounds a bit brighter than my 3 point ride does, but the stick sound seems to match quite well. If that's the result of the camera being a few...
