Re: Canít hear my kick!

Guitars with bass in the tone will not have the clarity needed to sound good in a mix and then they'll turn the volume up until they sound good, but the volume point is very small between being too...

Re: Yamaha finish touch up (what top coat/products to use to fix minor damage)

If it can't be buffed out with pure car polish (not car wax), try a uv cured fill with some fly tying head cement. It's clear and when you get it just right, bring it out into the sun and it'll cure...

Re: Hi-z Lo-z

Great!
This helps a lot.
Guitarist has the direct box/amp sim and the bassist has active electronics.
I wan't hearing enough of a difference to discern where the setting should be.

Re: Hi-z Lo-z

Awesome. Thank you!
It gets confusing when using a direct box amp sim pedal into the interface, or the guitar straight into the interface with a VST amp sim.

So, a direct box is needed when you...

Hi-z Lo-z

This may be an academic question for people who understand these electrical things, but I'm often confused as to when I should be pressing the switch on the interface for hi-z.

I have our band...

The gong

Why must a gong be smashed?

The gong is one of the most amazing sounds.

How did the world allow the cretins to usurp such a beautiful instrument?

Just thinking out loud on screen.
I know...

Re: Sonor SQ1 vs ProLite

But the prolites are thin and lively.

Comparing the SQ1 and Prolites, the Prolites have brighter mids.
The SQ1 are very punchy.

To me...
hearing the SQ1 and the similar but very different...

Re: Maybe I'm done compensating for my height ;)

I'd be thinking 20, 12, 16,
The 14 floor is not the good drum that the 16 is.
The 20 bass will appease the guitarists, but won't have that uninhibited drummer flavor. Even so, it's okay.

So bo,...

Re: Why is jazz drumming still so dominant?

There seems to often be a disconnect in philosophical topics.

When these conversations come up, we really should make clear whether the ideas being expounded upon are about cover tunes or...

Re: Maybe I'm done compensating for my height ;)

As someone who has been a user of so many different sets of drums, you have an intimate working knowledge of all those sets.
Why not go for a Masterworks?

Re: Sonor SQ1 vs ProLite

The Prolites will likely be brighter sounding than the SQ1.
The SQ1s don't have the old characteristic glassy Sonor birch sound. They sound warmer.

You'll have to hear them both in person.

Re: ANYONE WOOF???

How are these things tuned?
Is it used with muffling or without?
Is it tuned to the same note as the reso head and without muffling?
I'm simply confused as to how they are used.

I think I...

Re: What is a good drummer

That's an extremely low bar.
It's sounds like a socialist sandwich shop job description.
Anybody who can't meet those points should be clobbered with a gluten free hippy loaf.

Re: Kick Snare & Hat

Also in my opinion too. It bugs me.

I played in a project where the singers didn't want any snare in the verses and very little in the choruses.
I thought it worked well and the music had a...

Re: For you drum re-storers/re-builders

Denatured alcohol (dna) will soften lacquer.

It's used in colored furniture restorer.

It can smooth old finishes by letting it soak in and buffing.

If you plan on removing the finish, it's...

Re: I don't understand why people close mic

You do not have to give time for the drum sound to develop through the air.
There is a resolved sound for a room at a certain distance, but that's just one sound and one mic placement.

There is...

Re: I don't understand why people close mic

I completely agree with this.

There should be allowances in our discretions for any type of drum tones if it puts you in the right direction you want to go.

Close mic'ing is a little bit more...

Re: The 8 lug snare drum

I contend it's because the snare is alumin(i)um and for no other reason that it sounds so good.

Aluminum is awesome.

Re: Weights inside new Yamaha bass drum. Can someone explain how this works?

They're probably taking a cue from the Recording Customs with the purposely weighted lugs.

I tested the theory with Scuba weights.
I didn't notice enough of a difference to make an exclamation,...

Tama Starclassic sound great and look like they have luggage latches for lugs.

Re: I totally forgot how much I hated smoke

A product called Vamoose works.
Spray it on and when it evaporates, the smell is gone.
It might be the only thing that works.
