Re: For Bermuda

There are audience vids of most of the songs, with varying (typically poor) quality.

Here's Wipeout - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9NwcJC_2p4

It actually doesn't sound as bad as...

Re: For Bermuda

Thanks, Al put that together partly for fun, but mostly as a sampler to promote the live show streaming at Stitcher (they wouldn't have been quite as creative if left with the task.)

Most of the...

Re: For Bermuda

Some? Gee, thanks!

A lot of fun doing these, and a lot of work invested (during an already busy touring schedule) to just play them once. A few are deliberately different/faster, per Al. I argued...

Re: Damage control: take care of your stuff

Gotta meet ya half-way on the cymbal thing... pretty much all of the stands I use (including on tour) are set-up like this. No wingnuts to handle/lose, no felts to lose, and one-handed on & off. I...

Re: When the band you're auditioning for,..

If the band sucks, should you really trust their judgement anyway? Not everyone wins every audition, and Frank covered just some of the reasons above.

Don't worry about it, I'm sure it's an...

Re: Anyone ever use the Porters and Davies stuff?

A good mix is key to any performance, and the BC is portable enough to accomplish that in the studio as well. But I find that a thumper isn't really necessary in a quieter/controlled environment....

Re: Anyone ever use the Porters and Davies stuff?

And I will agree that the BC is superior to average thumpers.

Re: Anyone ever use the Porters and Davies stuff?

A 'thumper' simply lets you feel your kick, as if the whole stage was responding to it, but without the volume necessary to actually do so. The volume of the gig at hand should also determine whether...

Re: Why the same songs, when so many to choose from?

Agreed, even a fairly luxurious tour can become exhausting simply because of the logistics of relentless travel. There's also the emotional factor of being away from family and home life. Truly, the...

Re: Bill Ludwig III and new Ludwig kickstarter snare drums

B3 finally launched his wood-shell kits at NAMM 2018, but not much reaction from anyone yet. I didn't think the drums were out of the ordinary, the main selling point is that they're made by an...

Re: Matching Gear, Cool or Dorky?

I think coordinated graphics work if the band also dresses alike, a la many groups in the '60s. But with an extreme wrap like that, I feel it's over the top anyway.

Re: Ludwig Triad Mount or Vibraband on Classic Maple rack toms?

The Triad mounts first showed up on the Signet kits 4 years ago, and are nice and sturdy, and don't seem to hinder resonance.

I don't mind the Vibraband/RIMS, but you also have to buy a mount for...

Re: Why the same songs, when so many to choose from?

I'll be 62 in a few months, and still tour the world, and play in local original and cover bands when I'm home. Don't knock it till you've tried it!

Re: Why the same songs, when so many to choose from?

Hmmm, I play drums because I simply enjoy playing drums. Any song, any gig, it's all good as long as I get to play.

I've played those songs, but never on the same gig!

Re: Why the same songs, when so many to choose from?

It really depends what you want from your drumming.

If you truly embrace the pure joy of sitting behind the kit, playing and making music, then every song and every gig should bring satisfaction....

Re: A Non-Anonymous Section..?

People can still make-up a reasonable sounding names and playing history, I don't think that would solve anything. And a separate all-topic section means that specific topics will appear in a...

Re: Why the same songs, when so many to choose from?

Exactly. I would agree that we play primarily because we enjoy it (I certainly do!) But without someone to acknowledge our work, it's never really validated. The circle isn't complete. We don't...

Re: Why the same songs, when so many to choose from?

When I discuss changing drum parts, I'm referring to drummers who try to be clever by trying to take the part to a new level... to make it their own... to somehow make it better as a result. Sorry,...

Re: Why the same songs, when so many to choose from?

You beat me to it.

I always think I get the best out of myself, whether I'm playing for 10 people, or 10,000. But with zero people there, I don't even get the opportunity. I suppose there's some...

Re: Why the same songs, when so many to choose from?

There are hundreds of well-known, well-liked hits out there to choose from over the past 60+ years of pop/rock/country, that are easily playable by a 4-pc group (2 guitars, bass & drums.) There's no...

Re: Why the same songs, when so many to choose from?

I think there's a lot to be learned by listening to a variety of other drummers who've enjoyed some success. All of those ideas go into our library of parts and fills, far exceeding what we could...

Re: Why the same songs, when so many to choose from?

If you mean in the literal sense to create, you're right. A cover band is about re-creating (see below.)

I make my living figuring out how other drummers play parts, and how producers...

Re: Why the same songs, when so many to choose from?

And, would you expect it to be any different? Most audiences are about the song, not (necessarily) how well it's played, and not how adventurous the band is in choosing something obscure to them. The...

Re: Why the same songs, when so many to choose from?

That's a common perspective for musicians. You have to understand (and accept) that the vast majority of people that musicians play for in bars, clubs, corporate events, weddings, etc., are not other...

Re: Why the same songs, when so many to choose from?

It's both. Working up new songs takes at least a little effort, and honestly, unless playing to the exact same audience at each gig, crowds are satisfied with the same 40 songs for years to come. But...
