Re: John Von Ohlen: 'If We Wanted It Tomorrow, We'd Have Rehearsal Tomorrow'

That was a great interview-- I've reread that many times, and pulled out my own favorite parts (http://www.cruiseshipdrummer.com/2011/01/march-1985-modern-drummer-interview.html) here-- there are a...

Yes, @shipdrummer. It's supposed to be blog-related, but it ends up being mostly personal...

Re: Practicing everything with both hands

It's a good thing to do, I think its importance is a little bit overrated. I do practice everything on snare drum with either hand leading, not so much on drumset. It's up to you to decide how much...

Re: Can you read sheet music?

Hey, let's check out your playing, old man. I want to see your qualifications for making such colorful opinions. Give us a link.

Re: Hating your playing, sometimes or always.

I wrote a thing about this (http://www.cruiseshipdrummer.com/2015/04/feelings.html) recently- see what you think. A lot of it has to do with being more music-centric.

Re: Different jazz articulations on snare drum

I see-- unless you're playing the piece as an assignment, with someone checking your work, I would treat the accents as suggestions, and find my own interpretation. You're going to have to add some...

Re: Polyrhythm Metronome App

I don't know what I would do with a device playing a polyrhythm for me.

Re: Different jazz articulations on snare drum

In a transcription, I use a housetop accent to indicate a strong crash or a rim shot, or just a very strong accent. In normal jazz notation, like in a chart, they indicate an ensemble articulation--...

Re: Cast metal snares.

Definitely look up Gregg Keplinger-- my brother once brought home a hot pink powdercoated 8x14" drum made (I think) out of 3/8" cast iron, which Gregg loaned him. The thing weighed about 40 pounds....

Re: How to play 4 against 7

Of course they are, they're supportive of/derivative of the 7 side of the PR.

Nothing you're saying makes any sense. That rhythm occurs nowhere in either of the examples.

Re: How to play 4 against 7

That's a rhythm stating the 7 side of the polyrhythm. He's playing the drums every seventh 16th note, which states the 4 part of the polyrhythm.

I don't know what you mean. The groove is...

Re: Notation question

It's a beginner's piece, and the buzzes are preparation for playing a real roll. Each note is played as a single "buzz" stroke. The buzz stroke itself requires some finesse to do well, but the kids...

Re: Famous drummers mixing cymbal brands

I think virtually all professional players who aren't endorsers- and surely more than a few who are- play more than one brand of cymbals. I can think of a few specific examples: Paul Motian had two...

Re: How to play 4 against 7

No, it isn't. He's made a drumset groove out of it, but it's fundamentally the same thing.

Anybody here who can't see this? Let me know and I'll explain it.

Re: How to play 4 against 7

That doesn't matter. What sounds is a polyrhythm. It's just the nature of it that for one individual mfer to execute both parts of the polyrhythm, you're going to have to reduce it to one thing.

Re: How to play 4 against 7

What Bill was playing is polyrhythm-- you had to simultaneous, contrary pulses happening, which is all the word means. The fact that you can write them in the same meter means nothing, because you...

Re: Is it OK to talk about the movie "Whiplash" yet?

I thought he did the best job of that in the first scene, where there's a long take of him actually playing a solo-- though they must have had a drummer record the audio. I'm sure he worked on that...

Re: Can you read sheet music?

All of this. It's a way to acquire new ideas quickly, and to have a better understanding of music... and to store ideas, so you don't have to memorize them, or watch/listen to them in real time to...

Re: Elementary jazz question about accenting on the ride

Usually I'll play the bass drum or snare when accenting on the cymbal, as long as we're not just talking about accents within your ride pattern-- you mean a bigger, phrase-marking punctuation, right?...

Re: Learning to Transcibe

Just keeping working at it, and write down as much as you're able. Don't worry about differentiating between a lot of different drums and cymbals, unless you can definitely pick them out- otherwise...

Re: Best hybrid rudiments to learn

I don't know about best-- they're all kind of optional-- but how about a flam-drag-a-flafla? That's not what it's called, but I like it: a pataflafla with a drag on the 'e'. If you want to be a real...

Re: Does independence just click one day?

Part of it is just figuring out what the nature of independence is-- once you realize that it's not "doing different things with all four limbs", that it's doing one interconnected thing, then you're...

Link for that. (http://www.rollingstone.com/music/features/steely-dan-donald-fagen-coachella-tour-diary-part-three-20150410) Pretty hilarious. The comments are good, too-- I don't know why people...

Re: Why the "hate" for nylon tips??

I've been slightly obsessed with his sound, because it's so contrary to what jazz drummers do these days. I think he might have changed things up recently, but for years he played those fiberglass...
