Re: The Aviator

They both can cook, but the younger one is much prettier.

Re: quality of drum sounds to the rest of the band is not important

Have you thought about maybe making tip caps for your sticks out of surgical tubing?
And using jazz tapered sticks?

Re: quality of drum sounds to the rest of the band is not important

This sounds like a good situation for playing with e-drums through a headphone monitor mix.

Re: time keeping/ guitarists

I really don't hear much bad timing in those examples.

What I hear is the drums adding a jaunt to the first sections and then going into a straight backbeat in later sections, all while being in...

Re: Zoom Q2N (Camera) questions.

If you're without a computer, but have a smartphone, it would be better to get a mic for your phone.

Yes, you can edit the video on a smartphone.

Re: Latin Percussion???

There may be a biological reason why hand percussion isn't practiced in cold climates.
Repeated hand trauma is a suspected cause of Raynaud's syndrome, and it's not something that occurs as much in...

Re: Thank You Technology

That's awesome!
Last week I bought Toontrack Ezkeys and have been working up an idea for a composition. It's very simple, but the program needs more functionality, like cut and paste. It works well...

Re: Jojo Mayer - Questions

The Jojo pedal works for me. It's very convenient for me to fold it up every week to bring to band practice. The long board feels great. It has a great feel and balance and I can play fast with it. ...

Re: Jojo Mayer - Questions

It depends on what you were playing before you "upgraded".

It depends on how many pedals you've honestly used with enough time to know if it works or not.

How much would you have to unlearn...

Re: Handling pay & obligations while on the road

I was touring for six weeks and paid my bills ahead.
I got paid for those weeks at the end of the tour, but we were given $45 cash every day for whatever we wanted, even though everything was paid...

Re: Hey Joe: Great drumming or overplaying?

My sentiments exactly.

The Roy Buchanan version of Hey Joe got me to realize that it's a murder song and played polite just won't do.

Re: Not sure how to do this

There's also the Auratone speaker and their copies like Avantone and Behringer Behritone. Little cube mixing speakers designed to sound dumbed down. You only need one because good in mono is good in...

Re: Any ideas on aging, putting patina on chrome?

What if you heat them up red hot and then quench them in dirty motor oil?

Re: Micing and Recording Tricks?

-18db is a common gain for mic levels at the daw. The reasoning is to leave a lot of headroom for audio manipulation.

I removed the clip on mics and put them on stands because I was getting a lot...

Re: 42-strand snare wires

I think I tried 42 strand wires about 42 years ago.
My snare must have had a thin bed. I didn't care for the buzzing or the excessive amount of snare sound.
Even now, I have a hard time looking at...

Re: Sound isolation

You could start simpler by checking where the sound is mostly coming from and reinforce those areas.

I would try the cheap solutions first.

Try blowing in some insulation between the studs. ...

Re: Sound isolation

Spacing is unimportant as long as the inside wall is decoupled form the outside. Rockwool is not a requirement. Pink insulation is fine. Decoupled mass should do most of the work, so you still want...

Re: Sound isolation

Fill a fabric tube with sand and jam it against the bottom of the door. Also, use rubber weatherstripping as a gasket on the door.

Green Glue works if done correctly. If I knock on my wall, it's...

Is cervical radiculopathy similar to or another term for Thoracic Outlet Syndrome? That might be a place to research for useful healing and movement patterns.

Re: Sound isolation

I used resilient channel furring strips with two layers of 5/8" fire code drywall with green glue in between.

Here are some photos of how I did my room. It's not the absolute best way, but it's...

Re: New Inde Snare Drums

Those are the nicest finishes I've ever seen on drums!

If I owned drums that looked like that, I would be getting out of bed just to look at them!

Re: Maple/mahogany and Birch/mahogany sound characteristics

You would have to compare them to each other as the exact same drum brand and build.

Wood specie descriptors are subtle generalities over emphasized by the builder to make their traits sound more...

Re: Creative/minimalist kick drum muffling ideas?

I've used foam rubber and cut it to the proper length to fit against both heads.
If it's too much damping, pick away some of the foam that's touching the head.

That was before pre-damped heads....
