Re: DIY Gong Drum

The lugs and hoop are designed for the Tama gong drum. It was a bit more expensive than generic but I knew it was going to work so that's the route I took.

That's not stain though. It's aniline...

DIY Gong Drum

I made a gong drum to go with my Starclassic Maple kit. It was a lot of work to match the dye for the finish (Vintage Antique Maple) but I think it came out nice. The pic is of the unit sitting next...

Re: Buyers Remorse ?

If you're a serious musician and know you're going to stick with the instrument then there's no reason to buy cheap just because you're new to that instrument (other than personal finances, of...

Re: Help with trying to soundproof shop building

GG works but translating the impinging pressure wave into a shear force. That is, the sound doesn't transmit through the membrane, you can think of it as dissipating across the membrane. unlike...

Re: Help with trying to soundproof shop building

If this shed is sitting directly on the ground and not attached to any other structure, the last thing you'll want to do is raise it up off the ground on footers. If you do that, the entire floor...

Tama Gong Drum

I am wondering if any owners of a Tama gong bass drum could do me a favor and measure the distance from the bottom of the shell to the bottom of the stand mounts (not the lugs). I need to know where...

Re: Drums suck!

From an acoustical/mechanical perspective, the mass of enclosed air acts like a spring (since air is not compressed easily and therefore work has to be done on it). As such, it can be thought of as a...

Re: Unpopular Drumming Opinion Thread

Hey! I'm a pretty unpopular guy so you'd think at least half of this thread would be about me....

To me, putting glitter on nice wood drum shells is about as sensible as painting barber pole...

Re: What's your take on electronic drum sets?

What kits have you guys been playing? I've been playing e- and a-kits for decades and it is simply not true that you can't play rim shots or cymbal bells on an e-kit. The dynamics are different but...

Re: Unpopular Drumming Opinion Thread

I like the look of natural finish shells. In spite of their great popularity, I do not like the look of wraps, especially glitter or ones with graphics such as skulls or flames on them. I'm not going...

Re: Question regarding Rod Gervais Book

Pretty much. As I recall, he advises against using resilient channel because there are so many variations and so many things that look like it but which don't work like it. Basically, people buy...

Re: Unpopular Drumming Opinion Thread

Like phil said, that's in an ideal world. The reality is much different so it really is "really relevant".

Yes, it does apply here but lots of people try anyway. You can talk about creationism...

Even if that person is a member of Congress and they help pass or defeat laws based on these faulty "opinions"?

You tell me that chocolate is better than strawberry and I'll say "Whatever works...

Re: Unpopular Drumming Opinion Thread

Actually, there is plenty of reason/logic behind the chocolate vs. strawberry scenario: How that person's taste buds are wired to their brain. They don't have to articulate that any finer than...

Re: Unpopular Drumming Opinion Thread

Right, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion but not their own facts.

Where did this issue of "quantifying" everything come from, Larry? You can have an informed opinion about...

Re: Unpopular Drumming Opinion Thread

Ooh, ooh, I know, I know! Is it because this is what passes for news and informed discussion on the mass media these days, and we've become so accustomed to it that we have forgotten how to create a...

Re: Unpopular Drumming Opinion Thread

This morning I was helping a student test the control software for a new recon drone he's building. We managed to fly it quite a long distance, all the way to Pennsylvania as it turns out, when it...

Re: Unpopular Drumming Opinion Thread

The problem, Larry, is not that you succeed at not thinking on stage. Your band mates attest to this frequently and with much regret and embarrassment. No, the problem is that you are supremely...

Re: Dillemma...what to let go of, what to keep
