Re: NAMM 2015 - what do you expect to see?

Was really hoping for a much needed expansion of Paiste Signature rides. Doesn't look like thats happening.

Re: ALBUMS THAT HAD AN LASTING IMPACT ON YOUR DRUMMING

Both of these are completely badass.

Re: Another *&^%$# Bar Owner

The door cover cut is a pretty standard practice. Of course there's many incarnations of that in varying degrees of shark and shade.

To me, though, even as a musician, I don't see the business...

Re: Heavy music, where did the ride go?

What you're describing makes me think primarily of recordings by younger drummers in the metalcore/deathcore/djent subgenres. Stacks of trash can lids playing steady over some huge lumbering...

Re: Another *&^%$# Bar Owner

Completely unrealistic. The only time I've ever seen this be a part of the deal is setting up electronic music shows where the production company is basically inhabiting a property for a night and...

Re: ALBUMS THAT HAD AN LASTING IMPACT ON YOUR DRUMMING

That one doesn't get nearly the love it deserves. I think it's a close second behind City.

Re: ALBUMS THAT HAD AN LASTING IMPACT ON YOUR DRUMMING

Oh man. Way too many to post here.

Recently though. I'd say Yob's "The Great Cessation"

I'd say I spent the first incarnation of my drumming life really idolizing guys like Gene Hoglan, Danny...

Re: Metal drummers using Gretsch?

I've seen plenty of guys in metal bands here using Gretsch. The metal community doesn't have as stodgy of rules as some people might expect. People probably buy them because their $800-900 kits are...

Re: A New Believer In Brass Shells

I've got a 3x13 Mapex brass snare from the 90s that I absolutely won't let go of. You can throw any mic on it and it records really well. Always has enough sharpness to cut but a nice round warm...

Re: Who uses Moongel?

Agreed. I think the assumption is always that people use them to overcome an inability to tune properly. Which is, obviously, not true.

Re: Who uses Moongel?

I try not to use em, but our rehearsal space is level 11 reverb and hard parallel walls. As much as I'd like to let my toms sing freely, it just doesnt work in that room.

Re: Paiste 2002, B8 but why do they sound so good?

I'd throw the 3000s in there too. 2002 alloy with Signature style lathing.

Re: Who "invented" the rock beat?

You'll probably find a lot of people crediting Earl Palmer with playing a backbeat as the primary percussion part. Though I'm sure he was just one of the first to play it on a major recording.

Re: Cymbals that do not move

A lot of metal guys clamp them down simply to avoid them sloshing around while they play busy patterns. I had a friend who reasoned that he will break cymbals faster when they're loose because you...

Re: Big Band DnB

I dig. Kinda reminds me a bit of what Hybrid was doing with breakbeat a while back. I think they even used classical musicians from Russia on the album Wide Angle.

check it out...

Re: Discouraging & deterring theft on gigs

HA.

The correct response to that is:

"Thats a nice bike there....can it be pedaled by a boy with broken feet?"

Re: Is there a place or does anyone do cymbal swapping?

What kind of signatures are they and (generally) what kind of cymbals are you looking for?

Re: Discouraging & deterring theft on gigs

Man. Those load ins/outs are the worst. You often go through all that crap, accomplishing remarkable yoga poses to close hatches/lock doors because you have 80 lbs of gear in your hands, running...

Re: Discouraging & deterring theft on gigs

I have a beef with my current band about this exact issue.

They'll roll their heads and cabinets off to a side instead of into the back storage and I'll find bar patrons sitting their drinks (*or...

Re: Paiste 2002, B8 but why do they sound so good?

I find most of the 2002 (and signature) power crashes suffer from this character. Only the 20s seem to keep a bit of a spread in the attack.

Of course so do most rock or heavy crashes from...

Re: SKF Blog: A Great Drum Photo is Still Worth 1,000 Words

haha. My first band instructor (a clarinet player) forced us to adopt that posture while standing and playing our snares. Wasn't quite sure why at the time but my guess is he thought what Buddy does,...

Re: The being fired or quitting thread

It often isn't. There are quite a few articles in Modern Drummer where the subject comes up and the person talks about the circumstances and how they eventually learned that it's not necessarily that...

Re: The being fired or quitting thread

Never been ousted from a band but I have had to call people together and tell em I was done working with them. I think the hardest of those was the second band I was in, with good friends, just in...

Re: online "kit builder"

There was a downloadable program called DF Kit Constructor that had all sorts of different drum finishes and real cymbals from various manufacturers. Looked like this.
