Re: How Does Your Band Set Up on Stage?

I remember seeing Peter Gabriel in the 80's and Jerry Marotta was set up in the front of the stage, turned sideways so he was facing Gabriel in the middle of the stage. I always thought that was...

Re: Kinda' ok with slowing down

I just turned 51 and over the last few years I've been busy, but more selective. I'm perfectly okay slowing down and just playing the gigs I want to play. No more taking one (especially freebies)...

Re: It's official...we're done!

It is nice when the dirty work is done by someone else, especially when you were also contemplating it! I've been there too.

Have to say, being a person that doesn't enjoy confrontation, I did...

Re: That Erskine kit at NAMM

Always loved the Bruford yellow kit with him wearing the yellow jacket! Wil Calhoon also played (or plays) a yellow kit with Living Colour I believe.

I wouldn't say anyone with a yellow kit is...

Re: what are some great books about drummers you have read.

Agree with the Bruford and Erskine books. Both are very good.

I also really enjoyed "So You Wanna be a Rock & Roll Star" by Jacob Slichter. Hilarious and sadly true too. More about his short stint...

Re: Anyone else dislike suspension mounts?

Been using them for years now and I have always preferred the sound I get with the toms suspended. Just my preference.

Also, I think unscrewing 3 screws by hand to remove the mount on my one kit...

Re: Played my first Gig last night.

I like the replies here and would definitely try to transition (softly) to a small kit. If you stay on djembe, or use one here and there, just loosen up a little in your arms and hands. Let them...

Re: Do you ever stand back from your drums...

Yes, everytime I go past them. Even my least expensive kit is a thing of beauty to me.

Re: Really wanky behaviour....

Yes! And I can't even believe that it continues (for decades now) to rear it's ugly head. Got an unsolicited email inviting us to play one of these. You get 50 tickets for free that you can sell for...

Re: Really wanky behaviour....

I have two bands, one of which is a cover and one an all-original rock band. I don't have to rely on either for income (I work a full-time job), but all of the band members and I value our time. The...

Re: Jeff Beck w/ Vinnie (Full Crossroads 07 Set)

Awesome, thanks! I think this is his best lineup ever. Have to say too that Ronnie Scott's is one of my all time favorite concert DVD's. Just fantastic playing.

Re: Mainly for the women of DW: Who is your pick for sexiest drummers?

Yes, it appears to be a chance for the women to voice their opinion on the hottest drummer, and I'm sure there will be a couple comments here and there. Then it will simply (once again) devolve into...

Re: Stupid Newbie Tricks

When I bought my first set (used) as a teen, I got home and set it up based on a Kiss poster I had. Peter Criss had a floor tom on the left side in the picture, so I did the same. Could not figure...

Re: In need of some advice..

Go for it! If you get it, that is fantastic. If not, you will know what you need to work on for the next band.

Re: Looking for a good intermediate kit for about $600

Bought my M Birch used and I love it! Finish is flawless, tunes easy and looks fantastic. Couldn't be happier.

Re: Do you play the drum part exactly the same each night?

When I was playing cover songs I tried very hard to play my parts virtually the same each time. In my all-original, pop rock band I do not. I may play the basic feel the same, but the fills change...

Re: Musicians who don't listen to music.

I don't listen to as much as I used to when I was a teen or in my 20's, but who does? I do listen to music from my own collection during my 20 min (each way) work commute. I look forward to picking...

Re: Daniel Liljekvist leaves Katatonia to "get a normal job that gets the bills payed"

I'm not sure about that. I'd hate to take away the fun of playing and turn it into the drudgery of any old "day job". A job is a job - a means to pay the bills. Drums to me at least are a joy and if...

Re: Did Bill Bruford stop practicing for a while?

I agree, you should definately read the bio. Very entertaining.

Part of the reason he left Yes was the torturous rehearsal and recording process with the band. He talks about how they'd play for a...

Re: Latest AH HA moment...

Playing fills and mini-solo's over the bar line. It doesn't happen with every song, depends on the groove, but on certain original songs my band does, I'm suddenly able to think in 2, 3 measure (and...

Re: Other musicians' view of drums.

I take a lot of good natured ribbing in my band about not being a "musician" and other drum jokes, but it's all in good fun. They are my friends and I think secretly they would all like to be able to...

Re: Just a G.A.S. observation

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

I don't believe in having more of anything than what I need for my situation, and that doesn't just apply to drums. I'm at a point in my life where I...
